Your car symptoms sound somewhat like one of my old cars. In my case the fuel pump had given up, 40 miles from home. This wouldn't of been too bad had it not had died on my way to a job interview. Fortunatly for me an RAC bloke turned up, and despite me no longer being a member, towed me the rest of the way there.
I then had to walk to a scrap yard to get a replacement pump (such is the quality of the part on my car), i then had to dump the car and get public transport home.
it's something to do with the points and condenser on ours... jonny fixed them but didn't have the right tool to set the timing so they died again after a few days. have found someone with the right tool now though should be all good soon!
