"What are you makin', Kiddo?" Wyatt asked as he came up behind Kenna. She was spending the afternoon with Az, while he and DG were in meetings with Zone ministers. When the group broke for lunch, he ducked out to join the girls for a sandwich.
"I'm making some hearts," the teenager announced. She held one up, almost finished, and smiled as she showed it to him. Wyatt reached for the fabric heart and smiled.
"Lookin' good." He nodded to a pile of multi-colored fabric hearts on the table, of various sizes. "How many more are you making?" Wyatt asked, giving a smirk toward Azkadellia.
The brunette princess made a face and nodded proudly. "As many as we need." The project had started by DG, just after the eclipse. She was visiting the medics, following the battle at the Western Tower, and one of the soldiers was fiddling with a small fabric heart. He told her the story about his love, back home, sending the heart along with him, so that she would always be with him.
DG went home that night and, after crying for a few hours - the stress of the prior week had finally taken a toll on her - she started searching for old rags and a pillow no one would miss, and let the artistic side of her brain take over. By the time the first sun rose, the next morning, DG had made nearly three dozen cloth hearts.
Now, the hearts were something that the royal family made and distributed to patients in the hospital.
Wyatt moved over to the food tray that had been set up for the girls and made himself a sandwich then moved back to the table to sit next to his daughter. "Have you eaten yet?" he asked, watching the twelve-annual-old carefully sew the seam of the heart closed.
"Not hungry," Kenna replied, shaking her head. Wyatt frowned and looked at Az, who shrugged at him. As he finished chewing the first bite of his sandwich, Wyatt swiped his hand across the napkin over his knee and reached for the heart. "Daddy!" Kenna huffed.
Wyatt said nothing as he pushed the plate toward her and pointed to the other half of his sandwich. Glancing over, he noted that Az was ducking her chin to hide the smile. "And have you eaten, Princess?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. Az smirked and shook her head, but quickly finished the seam of the heart she was working on, and then pushed her seat back.
It didn't take him long to finish, and Wyatt glanced at the clock. "Okay, back to work." Kenna ate her sandwich half in silence, making a face as Wyatt reached around her and started digging through the pile of fabric scraps. He pulled out two pieces of similar fabric, and then nudged through the pile to find a solid color that coordinated. "Make me one, Munchkin," he asked, pressing a kiss to the top of Kenna's head.
