I'll never let you sweep me off my feet

Let's talk about the DC reboot.

I was curious and cautiously (stupidly) hopeful, so I got hold of Red Hood and the Outlaws, and ugh, I am so grossed out by what they're doing with Starfire that I can't even... *shudder* ( spoilers, if anyone cares )

comics: catwoman, comics: superboy, comics: blue beetle, comics: nightwing, comics: red hood & the outlaws, comics: batman and robin, just a typical prototype, comics: batwoman, comics, comics: wonder woman

The Catwoman run most people seem fond of is Brubacker's (he's the guy who co-wrote Gotham Central and is writing the current 'Winter Soldier' run on Cap) which is the first 37 issues of the 2001 series. What little of it I've read is very good, and quite accessible, though very very dark in places and I think it started as a back up elsewhere before she got her own series so you might want to catch up on those at some point too.

Cool. Thanks. I loved both Gotham Central and most of his Captain America, so that will probably work out well for me. *g*

Brubaker & Cooke & Stewert run of Catwoman. It brought Mindy newell's her Sister's keeper back into continuity, and is a beautiful noir hard-boiled thing of beauty. I suggest bailing before Paul Gulacy takes over the art, because he draws Selina like she's in a porno and that will make you cry.

I'm hoping that the thing with Kory is a plot point because otherwise that's a seriously weird retcon. If anythings ever been consistent about her it's that she's passionately attached to her friends. Does it look like they retconed Roy's ever having been a father out entirely? Gross as Cry for Justice was, it's even worse if poor Lian never existed at all.

Paco being a gang banger is baffling to me.

I hope so, but I'm not optimistic, because it lets them have her as the ultimate manic pixie dream girl who has sex with everybody.

*nod nod*

My understanding is that not only did he never have Lian, but also he wasn't a heroin addict, either, though that's from interviews, not from any text yet.

Yes, retcon the two things that made him interesting. He could be any dude who shoots arrows now. Whatever, DC.

Seriously. I liked the hints that there had been a past partnership between him and Jason, and that he at least seems to still be friends with Dick, but he was pretty flat here. Not as egregiously mischaracterized as Kory, but not as fully fleshed out as Jason.

This image from the new Batman just makes me laugh and laugh. Dick you are TINY. Tim you are TINIER. Bruce, why do you surround yourself with tiny tiny boys? I really do like the efforts Bruce is making toward being less grimdark, and IA about Bruce re: Dick and Tim versus Jason and Damian.

I knew that the Joker was somehow going to be Dick or one of the other boys as soon as I saw him flipping and kicking, but, damn, he made Dick be the Joker in ARKHAM for at least a full day. And where the hell is the real Joker if Dick was in there impersonating him? Lots of questions.

I have not read Red Hood and the Outlaws yet though I've heard not great things about it. I really enjoyed Nightwing though I miss the blue and hte fingerstripes.

That's what I was talking about! That is a height difference of more than 4"! Tim is always tiny; he shall always be the tiniest! So that didn't bother me. but I literally laughed out loud when I saw Dick barely came up to Bruce's shoulder.

Don't bother, unless you can get the edit without all the gross misogyny.

Yeah, Tim as Tiny is Canon, but it was shocking to see how little and slight they made Dick, at least in comparison to Bruce. I really like when Dick is built differently than Bruce is because he should be, but the idea of Dick!Bats trying to be Bruce!Bats if there's that much of a difference just makes me laugh.

Yeah, I might try to check it out just for completeness sake, but it makes me sad that I was looking forward to this book.

I love when you talk about comics! It makes me think I should make an effort to talk about which I am reading on Tumblr.

I also like it better when they remember that Dick is less brute muscle and more lithe and limber with his flips and shit, but I don't think you can get that much extra height without visible heels on your boots! Also, I understand there is some de-aging going on, but even at 21, Dick should be mostly fully grown!

I got a tumblr because of comics - I don't really want to engage with the fandom here on LJ/DW, but tumblr seemed like a good place for it, though I don't really talk so much as just reblog pretty scans and fanart. *g* You should talk about it more!

Even beyond the skeeviness of what happened with Kory in the issue, for me it's just straight up confusing, because almost all of the Titans/New Teen Titans stuff is supposed to still be canon, and yet Jason is explaining how Tamaranean's 'work' to Roy like he doesn't already know. Which makes absolutely no sense. If anything Roy should know more about her than Jason! So either this is an act/something else is going on, they're somehow legitimately thinking that they can keep all of the old stuff in canon but have Kory undergo a complete personality change without anything saying anything. I'm so confused.

Yeah, it's pretty much bullshit all around, which is why this "we're rebooting everything to make it easy for new people to understand! But random things are still canon!" approach is ridiculously stupid.

I don't get what they're trying to accomplish because all they're doing is confusing the older fans who are likely to confuse the NEW ONES when they talk about the comics anyway. And they barely changed anything with the Bats except they made everyone younger and tried to shorten things up so Bruce is still "young", which I am completely ignoring because it doesn't make sense, so what was the point? Good luck sorting this out, DC. It's going to cause issues later down the line in addition to the ones it's causing now. And I say this as someone who is enjoying things like Supergirl and Superboy!

Yeah, it's ridiculous. So Tim is still in the Teen Titans, but there was never a Young Justice? Or there was but Superboy wasn't part of founding it? Everybody is younger, so how old was Bruce when he adopted Dick? He obviously knew Talia ten years ago, since Damian exists, but was he Batman then?

If they'd just done a hard reboot, that would be fine, but this halfassed some things still are the same but other things are different thing is going to backfire, I think, because it will confuse new fans and piss off existing ones.
