Wait. Wait wait wait.

Are hipsters seriously making any kind of nostalgic comments about NYC in the 70s? Because...no. Just no. I am not dealing with that. Or rather, I will personally deal with the hipsters by hosting a Warriors style rally in a big open space and then SHOOTING THEM INTO THE SUN.

Yeah, I've seen it on blogs - it's ratcheted up from the mild murmurs about the Disneyfication of Times Square and (often valid) complaints about the whole "no cars in Times Square" thing to "NY was better in the 70s! It had real ~character~. Crazy subway tunnels where people got mugged every day! Trains covered in graffiti and soaked in urine!" (Um, as you can maybe see, I've mostly seen it on blogs relating to the subway? But yeah.)

I will bring popcorn and beer.

Bah but Times Square has always been...TImes Square for now, what? over 15 years? Just find your new busy center where the tourists only vaguely attend. I know they already flock to Union Square, so shut up, hipsters.

Yeah you know what I want from subways? Function and ease. I don't need fucking charming "urban" edginess. I need to get home/get to work and that's all I ask.

If you bring hard cider as well, I will let you launch at least 5% of the hipsters into spaaaaaace.

Exactly! Preferably without having to wait 15 minutes for a train that is too packed to get into.

Woo! Does Woodchuck work for you?

There might be some interesting class analysis to be made about nostalgia for grittier NYC. While we're more egalitarian in some ways, NYC is definitely a place where being in the right (medium or above) class can definitely insulate you from some of the nastier aspects of grittiness (subway cutbacks? Who cares if you can take a lot of cabs) and take a more philosophical/touristy attitude toward them.

Class issues, definitely, also age? I doubt most of the people nostalgic for 1970s NYC were actually alive then. And probably not from here, either, though that could just be my biases showing.

oh my god. "She's right, dude. You need to support the head a little more." "Babies don't have much in the way of neck muscles, you know."

Your husband is, and I say this declaratively because I am really sure, wrong, with a capital WR.

Dude! Have you seen the_dark_cat's Batman & Sons comic, with baby Terry McGinnis as the cutest thing ever in his Batman costume? Your husband is wrong like a wrong wrong thing there.
