"I really miss "Saving people! Hunting things! The family business!" I miss it on numerous levels, actually. Not just in the previouslies, but as Sam and Dean's mission statement."

That sums up, in a nutshell, the main reason that I've drifted away from Supernatural this season. Well, that and the need to single out Thai massages as having happy endings (a single line encapsulated so many issues).

I think it's kind of ... inevitable in genre shows that as time passes, the mytharc starts to take more precedence? And I don't mind that, even though I know the mytharc ALWAYS goes off the rails at some point, but a return to more MOTW stuff, with Dean getting his hunting mojo back, would make me really happy.

You're right - without the mytharc it would be more like a supernatural procedural and probably quite predictable.

It took thebitchtrolls and I quite a while to put our finger on what the problem was for us, but once we did it was a light bulb moment. We'd both really enjoyed the exploration of urban legends and folk mythology and the way Sam and Dean's relationship played around that, but now it seems that things have been reversed. Sam and Dean's relationship and the mytharc have been pushed to the front and the MOTW/urban legend exploration has been pushed into the distant background. I know it's giving the writers etc. a bit too much credit, but I actually feel like some of the early subtlety has disappeared.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that they manage to find an even keel next season, because it makes me incredibly sad that a show I loved so much has largely slipped off my fannish radar.

Yeah, I miss the urban legends/folklore stuff a lot. I mean, I am all for bringing in some big mythological bads, but I'd also like some standalone American folklore baddies, too.

I don't mind the Sam-and-Dean stuff being front and center, but I think they can't keep going to the emo well so often and have it remain effective.

>>but overall, I think I'd like a little less mytharc and a little more MOTW.<<

oh god yes, so much yes. i mean, i like the mytharc and i like that there IS a mytharc, but every single episode? i really miss the mantra. i miss the saving people and the hunting things. all there is anymore is mytharc and it's enough already.

fnl getting a third season is totally made of win, tho. \o/

Yeah, that's kinda how I feel right now. I am okay if they are mytharc heavy in these last four eps to wrap up this season, 'cause I think they need to be, but I am hoping for a more balanced MOTW/mytharc set up in season 4. SEASON 4! EEE!

And yeah, I am happy to get more FNL, too.

Now I am watching "Dead in the Water," and I really miss "Saving people! Hunting things! The family business!"

I just finished a rewatch of both season one and season two, and I completely agree. I hadn't consciously realized it was a part of why I've not been as engaged this season, but it's a huge part. What I loved best was that idea that they were carrying on their father's job, fighting the MOTW and being a family and working together. It's just not the same anymore.

Yeah, I miss the hunting/family business/dad's legacy thing, and also just the joy Dean used to take in helping people, and being good at it.
