Father's Day

Jun 14, 2006 08:36

I'm trying to find something nice to send my father for Father's Day - he's not really into "Hallmark" holidays, but I like to at least acknowledge it, because I love him and it's an opportunity to remind him that he's loved.

But it's very hard to find anything - cards or presents - that suit him. He doesn't wear ties (he's retired from teaching ( Read more... )

My, I go for books:

- Cobra II : The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq by Michael R. Gordon, Bernard E. Trainor [maybe not what he would want to read if he is thoroughly depressed and disgusted with the current administration.]

- Has he discovered Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series? At twenty novels it should keep him busy awhile. Nautical/historical fiction good stuff.

- Seven Ages of Paris by Alistair Horne. A sketch history of Paris and France.

- Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe by Laurence Bergreen. The story of Magellan's circumnavigation.

- Richard J. Evans's The Third Reich in Power, 1933-1939 and The Coming of the Third Reich. Heavy history but extremely well argued and well written.

Thank you - those are good suggestions! Most likely he would have read the Evans book already, but the Seven Ages of Paris might be nice. He and my step-mother are planning on buying an apartment in Paris as soon as their house in Cape Cod sells. The Magellan book might work as well.

Much obliged!

Oh, CRAP! I forgot all about Father's Day, and my dad was just here. In fact, he's probably still at my house. Last night we even went to Target, which would have been my perfect opportunity to buy him an early Father's Day gift.

Dammit!

I know! My first thought when reading this entry was very similar. I did GREAT at remembering Mother's Day this year, so it'll be very conspicuous if I forget Father's Day! I'd better go buy some damn cards.

P.S. Hugs to droid18 on Sunday. It could be tough for him.

Try Omaha Steaks (which is way more than just beef). I am sending my dad one of their gift sets this year and there were some really nice sets as well as individual items on the website when I was on their a couple of days ago, including quite a bit that I am sure a gourmet griller/chef would enjoy.

P.S. Also they were including a set of nice cooking knives completely for free.

You could get him one of Tim's cookbooks (she said, shamelessly plugging away: www.drgourmet.com). Or something from Lasater Grasslands Beef (grass-fed)....

I'm assuming that he's read the recent books on Alexander Hamilton, Washington, etc.

I'll also vote for the Aubrey/Maturin novels.

OOooh. Here ya go. Get him a Global Chef's Knife. Tim *adores* his.

There's this one book we read in AP History last year that he may like. Killer Angels. It's about the battle at Gettysburg.
Or maybe something for the kitchen, spice rack or something.
