More Fun Than the Law Allows

Oh Lucky me, I never win at lotteries, but I have gotten a summons for jury duty come Monday. I suppose I really shouldn't complain, since I have lived in this state for over 12 years and never been tapped yet. I think my mother has been called twice and some of my work mates seem to get dragged off to sit on trials almost yearly ( Read more... )

If you're lucky, like Dawn was last month, you'll be passed over during the interviews. Long ago, I did get selected for a criminal trial and it was not a pleasant experience thanks to certain of my fellow jurors and the general way in which trial juries seem to function. It will likely be educational. Take notes if you're allowed. By the way, the pay sucks...

Phil's rose bushes are getting loaded with aphids; I caught and tried to set a ladybug amongst them, but it just flew off--must not have been hungry. No real threats to the garden other than hyper-active moles generally tearing up the back yard.

Heh, I've been summoned at least four times since I turned 18. I guess they really want me, considering that I'm only 24! Fortunately there are a few silver linings to the cloud of epilepsy, one of which is a get-out-of-jury-duty-free card. Mom's been summoned plenty of times, and she hasn't had to serve yet. Probably because she's very opinionated and not afraid to show it. ;) Bring plenty of books and stuff to do, I hear the wait is incredibly boring. (Some of my college friends bring pillows and sleep on the courthouse lawn!) Hmm, maybe some more manga will come out of this? *hopeful look ( ... )

Jury duty in LA isn't that bad - either I'm downtown and get 1 1/2 hour lunchbreaks within easy distance of Olvera Street, Little Tokyo and (if I take the DASH bus) Chinatown, or I'm out in Santa Monica and said lunchbreaks take place right next to the beach, the pier, and a large shopping mall... Though it's been many years since I've been sent to the latter.

Things have improved over the years - used to be you were stuck there for at least two weeks, and might actually be on more than one trial if they were short enough. These days, it's one day or one trial (you don't have to be on the final jury; this is just if you're in the group chosen to select from).

That's too bad about the rose bush. Why is it always the nice plants that get killed during major landscaping upheavals?

Good luck with the jury duty! Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll disqualify you.

Vicky just got her first jury duty summons. She's blaming her new California ID card. :) It's also the week before Anime Expo, but she can get it delayed and will be doing so.

Oh, that's not fun. I have been summoned once, but I got out of it 'cos it was in the middle of Uni exams.
Oh noes on the landscaping! It is a good idea to get professionals in, not only do they have more muscles than the rest of us poor mortals, they know what they're doing. :) Good luck on that!
