We do have a heater but it is rarely turned on; only in the extremely cold times. The fountain keeps the water moving and keeps it from completely freezing. The fish survive just fine as do the water lilies and sometimes some frogs. Robert takes great care of it.
Well digging the hole was the hard part! ;-) We have hard clay for "dirt" and lots of rocks. That pond was made with a pickax and lots of hard labor. Then we just added a liner, rocks and water. The ferns were already there. :-) christinA won the fish, Robert added the flowers. We have had the pond for a long time now. It's NOT very big, but big enough to enjoy.
Oh and beautiful pictures by the way:). Randy desperately wants a pond. I fear we would just have a huge hole in our yard if I agreed! He has a pump he has been hauling around in his van for months now that he was given at work...it came out of an above ground swimming pool! I told him just to leave it there or get rid of it because we weren't digging a hole in our yard to cause more mosquitos.
Well... actually our pond does not harbor mosquitos. The fish eat any larva and the moving water is something that they don't like. We have mosquitos of course, but not from the pond water.
Do tell your husband that the pond requires a LOT of work. That may discourage him more if you don't want one. ;-)
Don't get me wrong. I would LOVE to have one but lots of times Randy's wants get ahead of his desire to actually finish the job and yeah lots of work and upkeep is not something else I need right now:).
One thing that is nice about it... When you sit out on the patio with the sound of the water and if there is a nice breeze and nice temp. it is very relaxing. In fact, if I sit on the swing watching the birds (we have lots of feeders out there) I tend to go to sleep! We get goldfinches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and well... just about every kind of bird you can think of that is around the area. I love it.

You have a heater for the water in the wintertime?

I have a permanent account and having all that room for pictures is one of the benefits, I think.
