Yeah, a lot of people like to forget Cordy gave him a vision and like to say Angel led the teams to their deaths like they had no free will. Drives me batty when they decided to hate the character by s2 or 3 of BTVS and persist in it ever after.
On the comparison with Chosen - someone pointed out at one point that Buffy et. al. almost died (and Spike did die) to keep demons from getting out and taking over.
While Angel and co. maneuvered to have a portal and a demon horde attack LA, knowing they would probably all die, and not succeed in killing them. From frying pan to fire - I wonder how many people died in the aftermath. (Fanfic has done a lovely job filling in that issue.)
I do love the 'intimate that one time' though I tend to believe that's just Angel and Spike. I think the Angelus and Will f*cked like bunnies.
Your review is terrific - lots of plot points to debate, and wonderful commentary on characters.
The thing with "Chosen" is that...no one had to die. It was a controlled situation. They purposely opened the Hellmouth, and went down there not only before Willow's spell took effect, but not even 100% sure it would work. And then there's the part where they dragged all of the other potentials around the world into it...And honestly, they could have just dropped a bomb down there and had next to zero casualties
