I hate going to bed drunk; I always wake up ~2 hours later and can not go back to sleep! So uh I spent seven hours dozing miserably on the balcony and coming up things I would like to write! I think everyone writes New York Stories but nobody writes Los Angeles Stories -- not unless they are detective noir anyway. (LA Confidential is so good of ( Read more... )

Set in Los Angeles, California, it tells the story of Harris K. Telemacher (Martin), an L.A. weatherman who falls in and out of love with the aid of a talking freeway sign which arguably speaks for the city itself.

Seconded! Man, I love that movie.

As for a lavender cloche, I could crochet one! I'm not too sure about my felting skills, though, because my only dryer is coin-operated and thus difficult to control.

was going to say Chinatown, but lawl noir

I read TC Boyle's Tortilla Curtain while still living in So Cal. thought that it defined a part of LA that I never really knew.

Depressing and not saying anything new at present time obv, but a solid read.

I should say btw that the area referenced in the book is the area where I grew up, so it's interesting to hear about its novelty as an "la experience" haha

Escape From L.A.
Renowned everywhere for its unflinchingly accurate portrayal of life in Los Angeles circa 1996, it is perhaps the work of fiction for the California-based apocalypse inclined. Which you should be, if you aren't already.

idk my bff Hotel Dusk? (I know you've played it, but that's the only thing that comes to mind) people just don't care about LA. George Bush, especially.

I AM ACTUALLY WRITING A P.I. NOVEL (OR AT LEAST PROCRASTINATING ON WRITING IT) AND I JUST MIGHT SET IT IN LA.

mmm, LA Confidential and Russel Crowe.

hotel dusk is a noir piece

also i think it is more of a nevada vibe

hmmm or maybe bakersfield

NO JOKE i want to write a book that is about a new wave band based out of east la. kind of like funeral party!! it would be a buddy drama about boys being idiots which is my favorite subject ever

I've confused all the stories I know about LA with ones that I've written myself. I fail.

And Six Feet Under.

But half the time I'll see a movie/show that's based somewhere else and only recognize it as being in LA because they were too cheap to film elsewhere.

I can't believe I forgot SFU! That's quintessential LA chic

It's so LA it hurts. ♥ But hurting is what it does best.

(South Park is actually taking on a very LA tone in its themes lately, but I think it's because the writers have lived here too long and the only way one will notice is if they, surprise, LIVE HERE. But this is unrelated and just something I've noticed this season.)
