Wow, it has been waaaay too long since I've posted! Things have been busy on my end. And, I've sort of succumbed to the dark side, i.e. Tumblr...but I knew that I wanted to make this post on LJ ( Read more... )

fannish rambling, dean/castiel, episode reviews, supernatural

I don't see what everyone else sees when it comes to Dean's sexuality. I mean, I would love to see some bi representation and I would love to see more people like me on TV...but at the same time, Dean has never pinged me as anything other than straight. He behaves pretty typically for a straight male in today's society. He might be a one on the Kinsey scale, maybe, but I've seen nothing in canon that suggests he's anything but straight or would ever identify as anything other than straight.
I mean. I still ship him with Cas and Sam, but I don't believe there's enough evidence to say he's bisexual, much less gay and in denial.

And this isn't to jump on you or your theory or anything. This is just my opinion on the matter, and I'll admit, the insanity that has been unleashed on Tumblr because Dean got hit on and reacted like 70% of the straight men I know kinda has driven me a little nuts lol.

I hear what you're saying. I definitely think people are overreacting to the scene in 8x13. The fact that Dean doesn't explicitly say he's not into men doesn't mean that he IS, and that argument just doesn't make any sense logically. I do think a lot of people are seeing what they want to see in terms of Dean eventually coming out. Yeah...I just don't think it's going to happen ( ... )

I think he could potentially be bisexual, but I don't think it'll ever get addressed in canon, so I see any kind of meta ending in "and thus, Dean is gay/bisexual" as being pure speculation. I'll read him with guys and it feels perfectly in character sometimes. So it's not like I can't see it. I just don't like to label him as bisexual. He could be, but we don't know.

And really I'm sure my discomfort with people labeling characters with sexualities that haven't been expressed in canon stems from my own issues with labeling and sexuality. But yeah.

Yeah, pretty much sums up my thoughts on it! He could be, but we don't know.

I guess I just wonder- does something have to be explicitly stated in canon for it to be so? There's so many fictional heterosexual relationships that are called "pre-canon." You know the guy and the girl are most likely going to get together at some point, but they just haven't yet. What's the difference between that and a same-sex couple, apart from the fact that they're same-sex? Well, nothing, and I guess that's where we are right now - people's sexualities ARE still default-straight in mainstream media.

I see Dean as straight myself and see nothing wrong with platonic love between men. I think today that's much too rare on TV these days.

I do wonder if there would be this whole Dean/Cas thing if either man was played by a fat ugly middle-aged or old man.

Yeah, a lot of people feel that way, and that's a valid point. For what it's worth, I love their friendship too - though I do prefer to think of it as something more (that's sort of what shipping is, lol) I do love their relationship as it is explicitly in canon, i.e., a friendship. And I would never want to sacrifice that.

And yeah, you're probably right on the last point - I'm guessing about 1% of fandom would still be around if that were the case! But, that's probably the case for most ships and most popular shows, period. Unfortunately, we're a very looks-obssessed society.
