Wow, it has been waaaay too long since I've posted! Things have been busy on my end. And, I've sort of succumbed to the dark side, i.e. Tumblr...but I knew that I wanted to make this post on LJ ( Read more... )

I hear what you're saying. I definitely think people are overreacting to the scene in 8x13. The fact that Dean doesn't explicitly say he's not into men doesn't mean that he IS, and that argument just doesn't make any sense logically. I do think a lot of people are seeing what they want to see in terms of Dean eventually coming out. Yeah...I just don't think it's going to happen.

We'll have to agree to disagree on whether Dean actually IS bisexual - because, I think there's enough evidence to infer it. But then you get into these complicated circles that I've gone around and around in my head - if something's never stated in canon, does that mean it IS canon, etc. etc. Yeah, not trying to get into all that there! I have enough trouble sorting it out in my own head.

(My gut is that something has to be explicitly stated in canon for it to be considered "canon." But, does that mean that all inference and implication is just subtext? I honestly don't know.)

Oh, and I would never think Dean is actually gay. Bisexual at best, because clearly he enjoys having sex with women ;)

But I hear you on people's reactions...I'm like, come on guys, even though I do think you could make an argument that Dean's not 100% straight, I just don't see this scene as proving that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Which is what a lot of people have taken it as and, yeah, frustrating.

I think he could potentially be bisexual, but I don't think it'll ever get addressed in canon, so I see any kind of meta ending in "and thus, Dean is gay/bisexual" as being pure speculation. I'll read him with guys and it feels perfectly in character sometimes. So it's not like I can't see it. I just don't like to label him as bisexual. He could be, but we don't know.

And really I'm sure my discomfort with people labeling characters with sexualities that haven't been expressed in canon stems from my own issues with labeling and sexuality. But yeah.

Yeah, pretty much sums up my thoughts on it! He could be, but we don't know.

I guess I just wonder- does something have to be explicitly stated in canon for it to be so? There's so many fictional heterosexual relationships that are called "pre-canon." You know the guy and the girl are most likely going to get together at some point, but they just haven't yet. What's the difference between that and a same-sex couple, apart from the fact that they're same-sex? Well, nothing, and I guess that's where we are right now - people's sexualities ARE still default-straight in mainstream media.
