Sitting, needle and thread in her fingers, Éowyn sits; the cloak in her lap needs be fixed before Éomer rides on patrol next. Quiet strains of conversation reach where she sits; she lowers the needle and thread.

“... missing from the armoury.”

“-know how long-”

“No, sire.”

“Order a search ...”

Footsteps approach, first two men and then one; her eyes drop to the cloak. A hand gently cradles the back of her head and she looks up, meeting her uncle’s gaze.

“A young maid of Rohan should be outside,” he simply states and she smiles, shaking her head.

“Nay, uncle. My duty for the day is inside, tending to my brother’s cloak.”

“Promise me you’ll spend some of the day outside and not labour needlessly on Éomer’s cloak.”

She nods and threads the needle as he walks away. The moment he is gone from her sight, she stands, cloak and thread falling to the floor, the needle landing atop them unheeded, as she hitches her skirts and runs. The sword she has been using is hidden but, she fears, it will be easily found in a search by her uncle’s men.

When Théoden later returns, she is finishing the repair to her brother’s cloak; he doesn’t notice the shortness of her breath as he walks past.
