It is heavier than she thought, hefting the sword in one hand; it always looks so very easy when Éomer swings it. As she remembers, she draws the sword back and thrusts forward and then she turns, swinging.

The end drops, clattering on the ground. Her gaze darts; no one noticed, she realises with a relieved sigh. If caught, the sword will be taken from her; she wants to learn but she knows it not to be considered proper for the King’s niece to learn this craft.

Determined, she lifts the sword from the ground, holding it before her. Her feet further apart, both hands grip the hilt, fingers tightening until it steadies. She releases a deep breath she’d been unaware she’d been holding and with a step forward, she thrusts and then brings it back.

This, she knows, will not be easy but also, as she thrusts again, struggling to keep the blade straight, it will be worth the learning and a surprise to her brother and uncle should Rohan be attacked and she be able to raise a sword in its defence.

character: éowyn, film(s): lord of the rings, fiction: middle-earth (movie-verse)
