Water sloshed over the sides. She skidded on the sodden deck as she braced for the door that would lead to the cabin Caspian had first taken herself and Edmund.

Where was it?

In the dark, with the boat rocking and the waves slapping the windows as well as the sea serpent coiling round and round, faces from the paintings on the walls leered at her. Her hand closed around the bow and its quiver.

Got it.

She ran for the deck, slinging the quiver over her shoulder as she ran. War, she knew, was not for women; it was something stated matter-of-factly to her during her reign in Narnia. But Susan had never hesitated when she needed to use her bow and this was no war. Lucy would not falter now. Once a Queen of Narnia, always a Queen of Narnia; she needed to do what she could to protect everyone on the Dawn Treader.

She nocked an arrow to the bow and aimed. Caspian was knocked to the deck by the sea serpent’s writhing and he saw the young Queen, her face serious and set. She sighted along the arrow.

In that moment, the wind and rain lashing her, her hand steady on the bow and nocked arrow as she sighted and aimed, he saw a warrior risen from Narnia’s past. A Queen who brooked no threat to subjects or friends.

The arrow flew through the chaos. He scrambled to his feet, intent on watching that arrow. Suddenly, he covered his ears, sword falling to the deck at the unearthly shriek and he fell to his knees as the ship buckled under the serpent’s writhings.

Caspian hit the side of the Dawn Treader, hard. Lucy pulled another arrow from the quiver.
