He wants to hold her, feel her breathing and is relieved she's alive. He remembers Regina, her anger and grief after Cora's death; the curse she'd wanted, tried to cast so Henry would be hers. That would have ensured Snow's death.
His shoulders tighten, strain the shirt he wears. His face falls into his hands.
“David?”
He looks up, over his shoulder.
“What's wrong?”
The concern in the voice he'd almost lost forever. The eyes that regard him so lovingly.
He shakes his head. “Nothing,” he says although the word feels hollow. Nothing would be his breakfast making him feel ill because he'd used old eggs. This was something. His world would have ceased to have meaning, his heart would have stopped. Waking in the mornings would hurt far more than it had when she'd been away because there'd be that knowing she'd never come back, would never be able to come back.
“David …” Her voice trails away as she walks around the bed, sits beside him. Her hand steals into his lap, takes one of his. “She refused.”
“She did?”
“Because my heart has started to blacken.”
He stands, pulls away, turns to face her. “We'll find a way to help you.”
“You said that already,” she replies, standing as well. “What's wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“You said that already but something's wrong. What is it?”
How can he explain the darkness that stretches before him at the thought of her death? That it's hard to breathe, that his heart becomes heavy, falls at the thought of living without her? He'd bring her killer to justice and then … what? Live his days watching Emma and Henry live and love and have lives that do not include him?
He'd almost lost her and that's something he doesn't want to ever put into words.
Instead of answering her question, he crosses the distance between them, puts his hands on her cheeks and crushes his lips against hers. Everything he is, feels, is in that gesture and he doesn't let go.
