Susan could already see them planning next year’s Hogswatch lists as she carries hot chocolate for them into the nursery; maybe Gawain wouldn’t be so twee or Twyla be as cute, she thinks quietly, setting the mugs on a nearby table. Maybe, she adds, she will have finally taken away the old governess’s teachings.

She hopes.

“Twyla, Gawain. Your hot chocolate.”

No notice is taken. She sighs.

“TWYLA. GAWAIN. HOT CHOCOLATE.”

Twyla slowly puts her doll down to come to the table; Gawain is already there. “Susan.”

“Yes, Twyla?” She pauses, turns to face Twyla.

“Why do we have all this green?”

“Where, Twyla?”

“For Hogswatch, Susan.” Twyla twirls a hand around the room. “Why do we have all this green?” The ivy, the holly, the evergreen tree they bring in and decorate.

Is this another simple question? Susan asks herself and sighs inwardly. “To show life survives, even in the dead of winter.”

“Susan?”

“Yes, Twyla?”

“Is that true?”

“Have I ever told you anything that wasn’t true?”

“No,” Twyla answers, almost reluctantly.

“So drink your hot chocolate with Gawain and think on what I’ve told you.”

“Yes, Susan.”

Susan turns, back to the small kitchen and, out of sight, sighs. She needs to talk to her granddad, she decides. All about Hogswatch.

Or the next holiday. She’s not certain which it will be, yet.
