Soot flies everywhere and there’s a tapping at the door of the stove. It opens and a boot takes a step out of the small woodstove.
Then another.
Eventually, a suited figure stands before the small stove and looks down at its list. It had heard a small gasp and scrambling before coming out of the stove but the red suited figure is very preoccupied with the list in hand.
Finally, it feels around in the stove and pulls out a bulky sack. Setting it on the floor, it reaches in ...
... and pulls out a large ham, setting it on the table before a puppy is withdrawn and put on the floor. It pulls its list out again. And looks behind it.
Sooty footprints? Yes.
HO. HO. HO.
The paper is tucked into its coat and then it pushes the sack back into the stove and, carefully, vanishes in to it.
Below, a small girl peeks from under her blanket, sees the puppy and scoops it into her arms, hiding it under the threadbare blanket. But not without a beaming smile wreathing her small, pinched face.
