no-poo

I don't have curly hair, but I'm still fascinated by the whole no shampoo movement. I had a friend who discovered in college that his hair was much easier to handle with no shampoo, but he confided this to me late, late at night when nobody else was around. It's okay, joe! There's a movement, now ( Read more... )

I don't shampoo my hair - much. Maybe a couple of times a month I'll shampoo it. I wet it & condition it daily, rinse it thoroughly, and wear a leave in conditioner. I get nothing but compliments on my hair. Even when I had dreads, one of the things people were always shocked about was how soft my dreds were. I hardly ever shampooed my dreds, but I did rinse & condition them, and use a leave-in.

I think it's good to shampoo every once in a while - but a lot of people shampoo every day and that's WAY too much!

I'm still experimenting too! So far, my favorite which defines curls nicely and keeps my hair soft is by Fructis, of all people. I just got a new one by Carol's Daughter and am trying it out, but it's only been 2 days so I don't have an opinion yet.

I liked the one by Mixed Chicks too, but it's pretty pricey.

thanks! i've been using straight kukui nut oil, but it is $$ and can be hard to track down. i'll try the fructis next :)

Are you doing conditioner wash, just omitting the shampoo or some other replacement?

That's my question too!

i shampoo about twice a year, with a particular fancy-ass shampoo (philip b) -- usually when i've gotten something particularly nasty, like a lot of motor oil, in my hair. other than that it's conditioners and shea butter and kukui nut oil all the way.

not that my hair is remotely like yours, but there ya have it :)

Every time I try to use a lower-soap regimen, I find that I have tremendous amounts of dead skin that accumulates and feels gross; scrubbing sans soap never seems to get as much of it off. Maybe I just have tenacious skin cells!

I have babyfine, chemically damaged (overdyed times infinity) hair that requires mad tons of product just to be thick enough to fit in a ponytail. I shampoo every other day, but I have to rinse the product out and condition every day or my hair gets dry enough to break. I wish there was a solution but I can't see no poo working for my hair. I'm really interested to hear how your experience goes as I'm at wit's end myself.

I think you and I have identical hair issues. I will definitely report back.

I am seriously hoping you have a good run with it. Having hair that's somewhat greasy at the roots but breaking and frizzy dry at the ends is just...not fun.

The baking soda wash feels awful, but once I rinse with dilute vinegar or lemon, it's better. And now my styling products are all wrong, so I'm just using a sea spray. So far, my hair is happier than it has been in years. Maybe it's just all the scalp massages, but preliminary reports from my head are awesome. FYI.
