Can anyone tell me what the penalties are for driving without license or registration in Montreal? Also if it is in a vehicle that is NOT owned by the person, the owner may or may not be aware of them using the car (I'm pretty sure they do though and they know the person doesn't have a license ( Read more... )

Car's gonna be seized/impounded in either situation, unless the lack of registration is because the car was just bought, but you still need the papers to prove you paid for it and just waiting for the plaque.

I already read that but are those the only penalties?

I'm not sure else you'd want?

If you've already lost the licence, then it'll be revoked for an extended period of time and you'll have cost your mom hundreds to thousand of dollars to get her car back, but yes that's the ''only'' thing that'll happen

He never had a license to begin with. I wanted to know because I'm considering reporting the person because it's unsafe and if he were to get in an accident then he and his mom would be on big trouble, not to mention the harm he could cause to another person from lack of learning driving rules, inexperience or bad habits he's picked up from driving around without proper instruction. The person doesn't even have a permit.

The whole penalty question has more or less been answered. As someone else already posted, the car will be seized regardless of who the owner is. (Side note: This is one of the main reasons why drug traffickers will often transport the drugs in a rental vehicle ( ... )

I think that's ridiculous, someone who's never even gone for their permit I think should be charged with reckless endangerment at the least as well as the person who knowingly allows it, as well as negligent Entrustment. Someone who's never even taken a driving course is putting their and others' lives in danger.

Also. Think this is a clear example of why there should be much stricter penalties. There's a reason why we're supposed to have a driver's license and take driving courses. When I confronted this person he said he didn't care and he would just have to pay a fine if he got caught. People are going to keep doing this unless there is a real consequence.

Too close to the situation. My husband owns our car, and two years ago, he didn't tell me that he didn't pay his registration/plates, and so I got stopped a few blocks from my house and they toed the car. The ticket for not having the plates paid, is 444$... unfortunately I know.

The Sept. long week-end that just passed, we were in Magog (about 2h away), coming back from camping. I was driving. We got stopped, and I had no idea why. Turns out, didn't pay his plates again... another 444$ ticket (joy). They were going to tow the car, but I started crying. How to get home? Have to come back to get car out from 2h away impound. Anyhow, police officer let us drive right home with no stopping, which we did. You can get one of those tickets per day.

So, it depends on the police officer. By law, they can tow your car, to be nice, sometimes they don't, but you can't drive again until you renew your registration/liscence, and until the fine is paid, and until impound fee is paid, if that's the case.

Hope this helps a little,

C.

You wouldn't get a 444$ fine a day, as they won't let you de-impound the car before you've paid the 308 odd dollars + penalties to renew your immatriculations ;)

They might let you off of the towing if your file is otherwise spotless and you're on a rural road halfway home from st-profond-des-creux but they'll be more than happy to let you ride in the tow truck cabbie to the pound where you can regain your keys with a little help from your friend Mr. Visa!

Police officer told us to go straight home... so if we moved the car again after that day, we would have gotten another one... and they might have impounded it, you're right.
