A post on a personal journal has prompted this question, and I thought this would be a fine group of people for the discussion ( Read more... )

I'm an anglo learning French, and I like to use my french in bed sometimes. So far the response has been positive, although often they don't know what the hell I'm saying, they just say it sounds sexy? Generally I stick to English though.

Francophones I have bedded with seem to use both, which is fine for me. I'm not sure if they did it because I was anglo or because they're used to speaking English, but I'm guessing it was the former. Still, I thought it was cute when they slipped back into French.

Yeah, it always brings a smile to my face when they slip back to French :-)

English... because the last time I had sex with someone who speaks my mother tongue (German) is too long ago to remember. And English feels very comfortable, really.

However... whisper French nothings in my ear and you have me in an instant. (Also, you could probably recite your shopping list and I wouldn't care because my French is very sub-par.)

Mon petit choux! hee hee! A German friend of mine is always sleeping with American soldiers and can't stand German men, so she has this issue where when one starts speaking German it's an instant turn off for her, Like get up and put her clothes on turn off. "German just is not sexy. Ever. I didn't speak German while having sex even when I ONLY spoke German" she says. :-P Is it really THAT awful?

Hahaha... would you believe that this is what a friend of mine used to call me for years? (Mind you, she wasn't hitting on me. I think. O.o)

I really don't know where the anti-German attitude comes from but I've heard it often. Though maybe it's just that it's rather polarizing. I have a Quebecoise friend and she says German sounds incredibly pretty. (Of course, with her speaking French and me speaking German... what a pairing we'd make. ;))
Though for me it's not so much that I don't like German but that I speak English virtually all the time except for with my parents. Maybe it's this omnipresence that makes it the most suitable for the bedroom, too.

And sorry for rambling here ;) I actually asked your question to everybody I talked to on MSN tonight... it made for quite some... interesting conversations. ;)

I'm francophone, but my first sexual partner was anglophone, and my sexual education was mostly done in English (thanks, Internet!) so the first time I had a francophone partner it was really odd to try to talk in French. The terms seemed too clinical. It got better with time but I still feel more self-conscious in French than I do in English.

Of course, I spend so much time thinking and talking and writing in English that when I hang out with franco friends, I have a tendency to switch to English without realizing it. So that does extend to the bedroom sometimes...

See I've heard a lot of francophones say the exact same thing basically "sex is in English." You know, like Lance et Compte is in French and Anne of Green Gables is in English and it just looks WEIRD in the other? (Although interview with the Vampire works beautifully in French we discovered last night. Better in fact). Which I find interesting because French has this reputation as THE romantic language. Interesting!

My Franglophone 11 year old is Offended by Dora the Explorer in French. It just seems *wrong*.

Teletubbies is awesome in French.

My first language is Romanian but since I've been living in Montreal since I was 7, I'm more comfortable and more fluent in English or French (plus I don't really know any sexy Romanian words that would be appropriate in that context). My boyfriend is Irish-American and lives in Ottawa, so any sweet-talking is done in English. Although sometimes he'll try his hand at French sweet nothings and I never understand what he's saying because he tries to imitate a typical joual accent and it interferes hilariously with his natural Irish accent.

Humm Sober sex is mostly french, as the bf is a frenchie and I've been speaking it enough to pass as a frenchie myself and it's really been no problem and no ''thinking about it and not being into it'' so to speak. Also, I think that like many frnaglophones, any and almost all sex words have been completely absorbed in french (TY swear words!), so even tho you think you're doing it in french, all the base vocabulatory is their dirtier anglo counterparts lol

Drunk/high/non-sober sex, I've been told that my really deep commie german accent comes swinging by so there you go lol

That's really awesome about the accent! I have been told I have a southern accent.

I am not Southern USian by any stretch of the imagination, although my family is/was.
