Some basic Avengers thoughts...
Things I realized going into and coming out of the Avengers:

  • The theater and my parents were very lucky that I withheld my urge to shout “FUCK YOU NOLAN” when the Dark Knight Rises trailer came on.
  • I remember diddly squat about Iron Man 2
  • Well at least this movie is the least offensive thing Joss Whedon has produced ( Read more... )

I love serial stuff too and I agree I think mini series need to make a come back but there are definitely excellent films out there.

I judge films differently from series, for me it's more like watching a short story. But I think to see some truly great ones you need to get away from mainstream stuff (not that there isn't great mainstream stuff). Although some people may disagree with me I tend to prefer a lot of December "artsy" movies to summer blockbusters now adays.

Although I am done with the super hero thing too. It just doesn't do much for me anymore. I probably will see the new Batman (just because I went to see the other two) but they are horribly overrated. I mean I don't dislike them as much as you I think but I also don't think they are the be end all of film that some people make them out to be (that is probably what turned me off them the most).

Well to be honest I tend to do better with the summer blockbusters then I can with the December "artsy" films which have a tendency to bore me because they end up feeling arty for the sake of arty and also tend to focus on topics and themes that I just have no interest in whatsover. I can enjoy film well enough, they just don't feel emotionally invested in them. I think it is the length. I think it is really just things about the medium that don't pull with me. I need more time with characters than what a film gives me usually ( ... )

Again it really depends on which ones you are watching that is why reviews are helpful. Yes there are definitely films like this but there are plenty that are not that have rich stories and great characters. I am not saying length is never an issue but the best directors know how to use the short length to still develop the characters & plot and create something thematically interesting.

Also I feel the December films rely more on story & character and less on special effects. Not saying there aren't exceptions of course. I mean I am looking forward to Brave this summer.

Also I don't limit myself to Hollywood.

I don't know, I also tend to prefer sci fi and action and horror to what most of the December films are about. Like none of the Oscar contenders over the past few years seem to be about nothing that I'm interested in seeing. I mean I'm sure they are good films for what they are, but they don't really capture my interest or feel like anything I would want to see.

But I think this is a preference thing. I'm not actually arguing over quality or whether these films are good or nogt, just film as a whole tends not to be a thing that grabs me in the long run. I just tend to favor serial narratives over that of a single film.

    >I wish mini-series were a thing that could come back in a big way. Like something that is longer than a film but isn't subject to the whimsy of cancellation or overplay such as regular tv.

    Yeeeeeeeeeeeees! :D
