Friday was our day to wander around in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with the elder Boadways. We set out somewhat lateish with a plan to tour the main crater (there's a road around it with many viewpoints and very short hikes (or longer ones if you want them), and then go down the Chain of Craters road ( Read more... )

Ok, quick update...Thursday, we took the main road our house is off of to its end to see what was there. From the looks of the map, this road use to go in a circle from here up into the Volcanoes National Park and back around...until a few years ago, it was cut off by lava. We left Tern Island a week ago now...hard to believe. It was a bittersweet departure - the people we had to leave behind are excellent, and the albatross and storm-petrels won our hearts. Today I've spotted 3 Black-footed albatross chick!!! They're so cute with their dense, fur-like down and their little (but really long for newly hatched chicks) wings! Very adorable. I'm so glad that we got a chance to see them today, our last full day on Tern Island! More later, and I''ve posted 2 photos of one of them - same link as last time~
