I got another Pilates book today. Like nearly every book I’ve seen, the first exercises are just Too Goddamned Hard if you’re a Pilates novice, and there are no suggestions on how to work up to them. The only place I’ve found a beginner’s workout suitable to an actual beginner is on the Weight Watchers site, where I actually think it’s worth ( Read more... )

I have fibromyalgia and, about 3 years ago, did a Pilates course as the GP had recommended it as something light that wouldn't stress my body overmuch. Bwahahahahaha! I had one class a week for a school term. For the 3-4 days after each class I was incapable of doing much more than getting out of bed and perhaps, with a following wind and help from the fairies, get dressed. Ok, some of that could have been put down to my known inability to do things at a slower pace than the rest of a class even when they're on something like their fifteenth consecutive year of attending and this is my first time ever. The instructor always starts by saying "Stop as soon as you feel any pain." I always feel silly if I have to tell her that I start to feel pain about 5 minutes into the warm-up exercises and that the "foundation muscles" stuff is about enough to finish me off at that point. I struggle through, feeling every fibre of my body burning and screaming with pain as I lie on my side, convincingly relaxed, leaning on my elbow with one leg ( ... )

Gah. I need a proofreader. Or maybe some brandy... "and screaming with pain" should be "and screaming inside with pain"; and "I'm sure they aren't supposed to be".

One of my best friends is a pilates instructor; if you like I could ask him about really really REALLY introductory moves, and/or a book on same.

My sister's also a Pilates instructor. :) *I* don't need basic stuff at this point, I just think the books are badly written for rank beginners. :)
