Superman #165 (Feb 2001), by Jeph Loeb, dealt with Superman's reaction to Lex Luthor being elected President of the United States. It's a Christmas issue, and in it he goes around talking to each member of the Justice League and asking for their advice and their opinions about what to do when you feel the democratic process has failed. i have to say, though, the art is driving me nuts (what is UP with Major Lane's FACE?!) ... Except for Lois, actually, who manages to look nice but not sweet in most panels!

IT IS. And when Luthor enlists Superman himself to stop them, it goes totally haywire...
LOL, McGuinness's artwork is not at all standard. I've come to really like it at times, how solid and blocky it is, but some of the faces are hilariously weird...Ella Lane's face throws me every time, good grief.

--Warning! Geeky babbling below! Warning!--
Back when I was just new to this fandom, which was almost 18 months ago, I didn't know anything about the wonderful history between Superman and my beloved Batman (Well, I started out as a Batfan *shrug*). One day I came across this aww-inspiring banner of WFGE, showing Superman and Batman head-to-head admiring some Christmas ornaments, and it stole my heart. I desperately tried to find out which cover was this great seasonal manip was from, and nobody could answer my question! So I magnified the picture, barely identified the cover date (talking about detective skills, LOL), and finally found Superman #165. Then Superman #168 (the title is: "With This Ring..."--How SLASHY is THAT! <3<3<3). Then Detective Comics #756. And I. Was. HOOKED.
So Superman #168 (or the manip banner of WFGE) IS the beginning of my quest for THE RING, and along the way set my ultimate belief that S/B. IS. CANON!By the way, you know what's significant about these ( ... )

YOU HAVE AWESOME DETECTIVE SKILLS. My husband, who manipped that cover, is tickled that it was responsible for getting you involved!
By the way, you know what's significant about these two issues? Superman #168 and Detective Comics #756 are the ONLY crossover (storyline-wise, I mean) between the boys' own books!Wow, that is really amazing, considering how often they appear in each others' titles, but you're right, it's never an actual Super-Bat crossover! I think we need another one, don't you? It' ( ... )

No one seems to know, either! Man, if I ever meet Jeph Loeb I'll have to ask him what he thinks, since he wrote both stories (It's probably a safer thing to ask than "So how did you get started writing S/B slash fanfiction, Mr. Loeb?")
And I adore Lois' reply to Bruce asking her if she was scared of being whisked into the air like that: "But HE CAN FLY!" lol! I love Lois.
It's a very sensible answer, too, lol!
And the way Clark himself was peeking all curious like a cat beside the snarling Krypto! So many delightful little things here.
I know! You almost expect to see little question marks above his head, lol.
