May 17 is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia and I wanted to do something to mark the event here in fandomland. So welcome to the Coming Out meme. i'm starting it on May 17th down under, but will keep pimping it as the 17th rolls around in your part of the world.

For many people fandom is a place they have felt safe exploring and expressing their gender and sexuality. But it can still be difficult for some, and fandom isn’t utopia - prejudice exists here as anywhere. I hope this meme will provide support and a sense of community for queer and trans fans, and maybe provide an insight for others into what our experience of the world is like.

Here’s how the Coming Out meme works:

Simply post a comment (or pic, vid or macramé pot hanger) sharing something about your experience related to coming out. It may be coming out to yourself, how you worked out your gender or sexuality, or maybe how you’re in the process of doing that now. It might be about why you haven’t come out, or experiences of coming out to your friends or family or workmates. Or maybe you just want to pop in and say Hi I’m (insert sexual or gender identity of your choice).

There’s no identity police here, if you feel IDAHO and this meme is relevant to you and your experiences, please post. Anonymous commenting is on.
