Ok, so at even longer last I have watched the ITV adaptation of Persuasion that was shown back in March.
I liked it. But (and this is a big but) it was remarkably similar to the 1995 BBC version. You might say that there isn't much scope for change in making an TV version at about the 90 minute mark, and that's true enough, but then you have to ask ( Read more... ) -

What do economists do again?
I enjoy reading Evan Davis's blog on the BBC news website - he usually does an excellent job of explaining economic concepts in straightforward terms and it's generally a thought provoking read.

Northanger Abbey
I have finally managed to find time to start watching ITVs Jane Austen season, broadcast a few weeks ago. Bit of a dilemma over what order to watch them in - Mansfield Park was almost universally disliked by fans of the novels and people new to the story; Northanger Abbey was generally well received all round and Persuasion had more of a mixed ( Read more... ) -

Becoming Jane
I've been watching the build up to the release of Becoming Jane with interest and some trepidation. It's a major motion picture focusing on a short period of Jane Austen's life.
I'm not against the idea of more Jane and I think a biopic is fine. I also understand that it needs to be at least lightly fictionalised - we don't have enough information ( Read more... ) -

Because I haven't posted for ages and I feel like complaining....
The media/public reaction to this is depressing me. I haven't read all the report yet (and I doubt many people have) but what I have seen seems pretty sensible.
