Twenty questions on what you think will happen in Harry Potter book seven doing the rounds.
1. Are you going to look at every possible spoiler you can before the book comes out? Did you with HBP and how accurate were the ones you saw?
I won’t mean to, but I’ll need to work hard to avoid the temptation. I did look at a few things prior to HBP but didn’t believe them. Some of them turned out to be true and although I’m not sure that spoilt reading the book for me I think it would be better not to know anything.
2. What will you do if Amazon (or whoever;) don't deliver your copy on time, and everyone is reading it except you?
I’ll buy it from a shop - there won’t be a problem buying it on the first day out.
3. Will you read the last chapter before anything else? Are you planning to read the book all in one go or are you a slow reader?
No, I’ve never done that. I’ll read it pretty quickly, although not necessarily all in one go. It’ll depend on what else is going on that day. My cousin’s wedding was the day HBP came out and I was flying to Cyprus the day OotP came out so obviously I couldn’t just read the book and not do anything else those days!
4. What's your theory on the meaning of "Deathly Hallows?"
I think it’s either a place/s or a reference to Halloween. Whichever, I reckon it has something to do with Godric’s Hollow and probably Horcruxes too.
5. What's the craziest Harry Potter theory you've got?
Toughest question, this one. I’m not sure I have any crazy theories. I was pretty taken by the Harry as Horcrux theory for a while, but it’s not mine.
6. If you could write in a sub-plot of your own choosing to the main Harry one, what would it be?
Something involving lots of the minor characters, either at Hogwarts or the Order of the Phoenix. OotP is my favourite of the series, and a lot of that is because it looks much wider than Harry and we get to know background characters so much better. I guess I’d probably go for what’s happening at the school with Neville, Ginny, Luna etc. As long as it isn’t just lots more snogging anyhow….
7. Who do you think will die in the book, and who would you be most upset to see die, even if you don't think it's likely?
At least one Weasley. Maybe Charlie or one of the twins. I think Bill, Ron and Ginny are pretty safe. Hagrid perhaps - I read something about alchemy a while ago that was talking about the significance of black, white and red and predicting this meant Hagrid would die in book 7 (Sirius Black, Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid being the pattern.)
I’d be upset if Remus died. And Tonks or Hermione. I don’t think any of them will. Remus might have, but bringing in Tonks suggests giving him a future and he has suffered enough.
8. Name three main (ish) characters who you think will definitely live and why. Is there a very minor character(s) you really want to have a happy ending?
I doubt either Ron or Hermione will die - they are central to the whole series and there is no particular logic in killing them at the end. What would it show? Harry has already lost so many people who are important to him and Ron and Hermione are about his future ‘family’ (I don’t mean in a one big happy Weasley family sort of way) as much as his present. I think the same probably applies to Ginny.
Neville. And Luna. They are both so resilient in the face of their difficult lives.
9. If you don't like the book, or are bitterly disappointed by it, do you think you'll still stay in the fandom?
I expect so, although I will get tired of it at some point.
10. One word (or concise) answers only!
- Snape: I want to think that he’s on the good side and there was a reason for killing Dumbledore.
- Bill: I think he’ll live happily ever after with Fleur!
- Peter: He’ll redeem himself in some way, perhaps sacrificing himself. Or is that too easy? I’d like to understand Peter better. Why did he do what he did?
- The Weasleys: I think I’ve covered his already. I reckon Molly will make it, Arthur probably. Charlie, Fred and George are the question marks. It would be pretty depressing for one of the twins to die.
- Did Snape love Lily: Too obvious, surely.
- Hogwarts: I hope we see some of it at least; it wouldn’t be a Harry Potter book without Hogwarts. I don’t want DH to be too different to the rest.
- Remus and Tonks: will they get married in the book? I have to agree with various other people who have suggested that they will have got married off camera. No big wedding in the book for them, I suspect.
- Bellatrix: Neville should be responsible for her capture. Maybe Peter instead.
- The new leader of the OotP is Harry
- Percy: Unfortunately, I don’t think he’s going to redeem himself in any big way. Maybe a partial reconciliation. He's not evil though.
11. If Harry could take just one adult Order of the Phoenix member with him on the search for Horcruxes, who should it be and why?
Hmm. One of the Aurors would make sense. Maybe Kingsley. Considering how difficult it was for Dumbledore, Harry is going to need all his luck. He’s not a great wizard after all. And for all her talent, Hermione isn’t Dumbledore.
12. Will Remus and Greyback have a confrontation in human or werewolf form? Will Tonks be involved? Who will the other werewolves support?
I’m not sure they’ll be room in the book for the werewolf subplot but I’d like to see Remus get his revenge. However, I don’t think werewolves are ever going to be an accepted part of society.
13. Who is the person from Harry's class (and it isn't him, Ron or Hermione), who will become a Hogwart's teacher? What subject will they teach?
Neville and Herbology is the obvious, and probably most likely answer.
14. Do you think Harry will observe Remus looking less lined and walking with a little more of a spring in his step? If so, do you think he'll attribute it to Tonks, and if he does, will he blush?
No. There won’t be room for this is the book and really there shouldn't be - it’s the stuff of fanfic.
15. Will Ginny use, "But Professor Lupin saw the futility of being a noble prat!" for one of her million arguments with Harry about why they should be together? Do you think they'll get back together at all?
Ginny seemed pretty accepting at the end of HBP. I don’t think she’ll argue too much, although I expect she will play a role in the book. Yes, they will get together eventually, if Harry survives.
16. Which house do you think Tonks is in, and why? Is she going to morph into someone important and who will it be?
I don’t know and I suspect we won’t find out. I’m not sure where I stand on this debate. I do think there has to be some reason for metamorphaguses (sp?) but it might be too obvious for it play a major role. I think we might see another one in some minor bit of the story, or may have met one already.
17. Who will be revealed to be the heir of Gryffindor?
Does anyone have to be? Harry or Dumbledore if there has to be.
18. As JKR has promised the final chapter will be like an epilogue; how do you think the final paragraph (hopefully) donated to Remus' future, and/or Tonks', and/or anyone else you want to write a paragraph on, will read?
That they had a difficult time being accepted, because werewolves were still feared, and Remus could never make much money. But although that still caused problems between them from time to time, they were very happy together and regular babysitters for Harry and Ginny.
19. Which question from the books would it annoy you most not to have answered?
Why Peter turned to Voldemort. I am presuming that we will find out all about Snape. Ooh, and all about Regulus. And Petunia.
20. What do you think the last line of the book is?
Presuming it does end in scar, then it will be something about Harry being able to lead a normal life at last, but never being completely able to escape his past and the scar.
