Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8---------------------------------------
Bam was furious. He wanted to go back to their room and punch Ville in the face, repeatedly. He wanted those green eyes to swell shut so they wouldn’t lie to him anymore, he wanted those sweet lips to be so bruised that there wouldn’t be any false promises coming out between them, and most importantly he didn’t want to hear anything like what Ville had just told him. He wanted to hurt Ville, to make him feel even worse than Bam himself was feeling and the urge was a bit scary.
So instead of going back to his room he wandered around the campsite, noticing that there was still light coming out of most rooms, the kids were still awake. Finally he ended up by the pool, just standing there staring into the cyan water that was illuminated by lamps so that it looked like some sort of a jewel in its dark surroundings.
At that moment it seemed like the best of ideas, so Bam just jumped in, clothes and all. But the water wasn’t cold and it didn’t quench the burning hurt and rage inside him, it just made him feel foolish and it was hard to stay afloat when his jeans and sneakers were weighing him down.
“Need a hand?”
The voice surprised Bam so much that he almost went under when he tried to turn around too fast. So he was sputtering out water as he finally located the source of the voice. It was Jake who was just a few feet away from him, blond hair slick against his head and an amused smirk on his face.
“Um, no. I just think I need to climb out of here.” Bam answered and felt even more foolish because now there was a witness to his humiliation. So he turned again and waded back to the edge of the pool and climbed up the latter.
Jake had been just behind him and now they were standing there facing each other, Bam in his soaking wet clothes and Jake in his swimming trunks. “So why did you decide to jump into the pool with your clothes on?” Jake asked, taking hold of Bam’s wet t-shirt with two fingers and pulled the fabric away from Bam’s torso, where it had been clinging. “It’s not the most flattering look.” The swimmer added.
At once Bam felt himself blush and he wrapped his arms around himself like that would hide his body. He felt inferior standing there opposite Jake who had the perfect body you get from working out regularly, and Bam doubted that Jake had any fat anywhere in his body. He turned his head to the side and said. “I, I just, I was pissed off and thought it would cool me down.”
Jake smiled teasingly. “Well did it work? And what made you so pissed?”
“Not really… well sure it worked, now I feel stupid instead of angry. And I just had a fight with Ville.” He heard himself admit and as soon as the words were out he wanted to take them back. It was none of Jake’s business and he felt weird talking about it.
Because Bam wasn’t looking at Jake he missed the satisfied smirk that was quickly replaced by a sympathetic smile. “I’m sorry man, why’d you argue? I got the impression that you were really close.”
Bam could hear the special weight given to the last word and again he blushed wondering if Ville had been right about Jake and if the guy really had been flirting with him earlier.
He just shook his head. “I don’t really want to talk about it. Why were you swimming this late, isn’t it like against the rules?” he wanted to change the subject.
Jake laughed and walked to one of the plastic chairs and took his towel from it and wrapped it around himself. “Sure, you aren’t supposed to go swimming during the evening because nobody is guarding the pool, but I am the pool guard so I thought I would be safe. And I don’t mind breaking the rules now and then.” Jake explained smiling easily and Bam found himself thinking that Jake was really, really attractive, in that buff jock sort of way.
But Jake was still talking. “And I need to practice regularly and the pool is full during the day, I have no room to do my laps. Not that I’m going to compete anymore, I’m too short to be really fast. Got into a college to study physical education. Can you believe it, I’m going to be a gym class teacher.” And he laughed, obviously amused by the thought.
“I’m sure all the kids’ll love you.” Bam noted because damn, he wouldn’t have minded going to his own classes if his teacher had been as hot as Jake.
“You think so?” Jake asked, giving Bam a look that even he couldn’t misunderstand, oh yeah, Jake really was flirting with him. …What the fuck was he supposed to do now??
“Um, yeah, I’m sure of it.” He stammered and felt himself blushing. This was insane…
Jake took a few steps toward Bam so they were now standing almost toe-to-toe and whispered. “I really like it when you blush, you look so cute.” And before Bam could even come up with a reply Jake was kissing him. On the lips.
When Jake pulled away he was again smiling and said. “See you around Bam.” And walked away leaving Bam standing there, his feelings in turmoil.
What did this mean? Okay he found Jake hot. …really hot. The kiss had been a big surprise but it had sent sparks of lust running down his spine. He wouldn’t mind kissing Jake again. Where did that leave Ville then? He had been so mad when Ville had just dumped him, said there was no point in trying to be together, and Bam himself had told Ville that they couldn’t be friends anymore. Was it all over? Should he just move on? To Jake?
He sat on the edge of the pool even though his clothes felt cold and uncomfortable now. Ville had made him nervous and at peace at the same time, he had made Bam’s heart beat faster when he just glimpsed the older boy during the day. He had wanted to kiss Ville even before he really had the courage to do it. He had imagined what it would be like to have sex with Ville. He had been falling for the other guy.
But what should he do now? Ville had put an end to their thing before Bam could find out if he had really been falling in love or if he’d just been having a big crush. Maybe Ville had done the right thing after all. The singer did have a point about how hard it would have been to separate in a few months if they had been… dating? Going out? Having a relationship? for the rest of the camp. Bam’s shoulders slumped because even now the idea of being together with Ville made his heart jump because he really liked the guy.
Should he try that with Jake? Bam didn’t really know anything about the guy but that didn’t mean anything, he didn’t know Ville that well either.
Bam stood up, because he was really starting to get cold, and walked back to the dorm and then stopped to stand outside the door because Ville would be there. How should he act?
______________
Ville hadn’t been able to fall sleep even though he had been lying in his bed for at least half an hour. It wasn’t just that it was still way too early to go to bed anyway, mostly he just couldn’t relax until he saw Bam again. Where had the other boy gone? Ville had been debating about whether he should have gone looking for the skater or not, but had decided against it because Bam had been so angry.
When the door opened Ville’s eyes popped open and he turned to his side so he could see the door as Bam stepped inside and threw his shoes off with jerky, angry movements. Ville sighed silently and closed his eyes to slits so Bam would think he was already sleeping. Then Bam walked to his own bed and Ville could see that the other boy was soaking wet.
“What happened to you Bam?” he asked and sat up, worried.
Bam didn’t turn to look at him, just pulled his t-shirt over his head muttering. “None of your business, Ville, go back to sleep.”
“I wasn’t sleeping, I was worried about you.” Ville admitted and pulled his knees up and hugged them, resting his chin on the kneecaps.
Bam glanced at him over his shoulder, his wet hair framing his face beautifully, though the effect was ruined by the fact that Bam looked petulant and was frowning. “You said it yourself Ville, we aren’t seeing each other, we don’t have a relationship, so you have no reason to worry about me.”
Ville wanted to start arguing with Bam but decided against it, instead just saying. “But I’m still your friend whether you are mine or not, and I care about my friends, a lot.”
For a second Bam’s face softened and he looked like he was going to say something but then the wall came back up and there was hostility between them. “Well I don’t want to be your friend.” Bam claimed and climbed under his bedclothes and soon kicked his wet jeans out of the bed.
Any other day Bam’s coyness would have made Ville smile and tease the younger boy about it, but things weren’t right between them anymore and Ville didn’t have that right anymore. Sighing Ville lay back down as well and stared at the ceiling, listening to Bam breath just a few feet away from him but still so impossibly distant.
Ville had been doubting his decision all night, arguing with himself whether he had done the right thing or not. And now he felt strongly that he had made a mistake, it would have been worth the heartache if he just could go to Bam now and lay next to him, touch him, make things better.
However Bam didn’t want that anymore. Ville guessed that it was about bruised ego and self-confidence more than anything. Bam thought that Ville had humiliated him and Ville was sure that Bam didn’t forgive something like that.
-----------
The next morning the boys went to breakfast separately and sat in different tables. Ville poked at his scrambled eggs with his fork absentmindedly, never taking his eyes away from Bam who was sitting with Karoliina and some other kids Ville didn’t recognize. Bam looked tired and was just sipping coffee, Ville wondered if Bam had lost his appetite because of their fight, because it sure was affecting Ville.
“Why are you staring at Bam?” Linde asked between bites of toast that was layered with jam. Ville scrunched his nose at his friends taste in food but answered anyway. “I took your advice and sort of broke up with Bam, not that we were together to begin with.”
Linde looked surprised. “Huh? I never thought you’d actually take my advice.”
Ville glared at the blond. “Of course I do, when don’t I?” he sounded hurt.
“You never listen to what me or Mige say. You are such a determined and mule-headed guy, I’ve never met anyone worse that you.” Linde said grinning.
Ville frowned. ”I do listen to you guys… don’t I?”
“Eh, not really. If you have something decided already nothing can make you change your mind. Well, except your mom sometimes.” Linde amended his statement.
Then the blond frowned as well. “So why did you listen to us? Were you having second thoughts about dating Bam anyway?”
Ville shook his head “No, I was really happy with him, he is such good company, makes me smile and laugh, he’s so hot and cute. Have you seen him blush? It always makes me want to tackle him to the ground and kiss him until we run out of breath.”
Linde looked puzzled. “So why did you break up then?”
“I was scared. When I thought about leaving here and never seeing him again it felt like my heart would burst. I can’t even think about what I’d feel if had time to get to know him better and fall in love with him. So I just bailed I guess.” Ville admitted and continued to stare at Bam across the room.
Mige appeared in front of Ville, blocking his view and the brunette made and exasperated noise and waved at the bassist to move. His oldest friend laughed and sat down next to Linde. “Be glad that not that many people understand Finnish here because man you sound like such girls.”
Ville and Linde directed identical glares at the older boy and then Ville went back to his staring after flipping his friend off absentmindedly. Bam was saying something to a couple of boys and they all got up and left the breakfast room to Ville’s disappointment.
He turned his attention to his friends and found that Mige had already made up with Linde who was now laughing at something that the older boy was whispering in his ear. Seeing them so happy made Ville feel even more of a fool and he sighed loudly, hoping to attract the attention of his friends.
No luck there though, so Ville just glared at his now cold breakfast and felt sorry for himself.
--------------
Bam spent the day like any other so far. He skated, watched other kids skate and laughed with the others when someone fell down. But unlike his students he actually had to go down to the kid afterwards to make sure he was okay. It had taken Bam some time to remember that he was supposed to take care of these kids and it still amazed him that someone had trusted the children to his care and he really wasn’t sure how he felt about having this kind of responsibility. He was just a kid himself as well. A very confused kid!
The day kept him busy enough that he didn’t have any time to think about Ville, or Jake. And he liked it that way. So of course it couldn’t last. As soon as he was done with the last lesson and he dropped out of the ramp and walked to his towel he found Jake lounging on the bench, taking up space like he owned the world. It was oddly appealing and Bam hid his face in the towel for a second to clear his thoughts and to wipe away the sweat.
“I thought we could hang out, you have free time before the evening activities too, right?” Jake asked but didn’t seem too concerned if Bam did have something.
“Oh, I mean sure. I’ll just take a shower first, okay?” Bam asked, feeling one of those cursed blushes coming on and shifted on his feet.
Jake got up to his feet and stood just a bit too close to Bam, invading his personal space. “Need a hand with that?”
Bam swallowed and his eyes grew wide as saucers. “Uh… I…” he stammered intelligently because his mind had come to a screeching halt.
Jake laughed and ruffled Bam’s hair. “Aw you blush like a virgin, but I guess it’s not a good idea, anyone can walk into those public showers. So lets meet at the door to the main building in half and hour, we’ll go for a walk. ”
Bam was left to stare after Jack’s retreating back and his eyes drifted lower to appreciate the firm ass, perfectly framed by Jake’s shorts. It took Bam a minute to snap out of his stupor and then he grabbed his board and ran to the showers. He didn’t want to be late!
In the shower he tried really hard not to think about Jake giving him a hand, or anything else to that direction but that brought him to realize what Jake had said as well. Jake thought he had some experience with guys. Bam swallowed again. Should he tell Jake? He didn’t want to, the thought of trying to explain that to the blond felt embarrassing.
He finished the shower fast and dried himself before going back to his room to change. Luckily Ville wasn’t there but Ryan was. “Yo dude, haven’t seen you around much.” Dunn exclaimed and looked up from his comic.
Bam noticed that Dun had a dark love-bite on his neck and felt annoyed. “Fuck you. You’re the one who has his dick so deep in a chick that he doesn’t have any time for his friends.” He continued getting dressed as he spoke.
“Come on Bam, you’d do the same if someone actually paid interest to you.” Dunn said, voice light and a bit apologetic.
Bam sighed and turned to face his friend. “Yeah, I guess. But talk to you later I’m meeting someone in ten minutes.” He checked his appearance from the small mirror in the closet door and straightened his t-shit wishing for the first time he had something else than two sizes too big Element shirts with him. Jake made him feel like he had to make an effort, to look as good as he could.
“Hot date?” Dunn asked bringing Bam back to the present and making him blush yet again.
“N-no.” he denied.
“Oh fuck, you do have a date!” Dunn almost shrieked and sat bolt upright, leaning closer to Bam. “Who is it? Is she cute? Not one of the brats I hope, because even you can do better.”
Bam flipped Dunn off and tried not to freak out. Why did Dunn have to know him so well? “Just shut up, I’m not telling you and no it’s not one of the kids, git.”
Dunn lifted his brows. “Git? What’s that?”
Bam shrugged. “Dunno, Ville said it once…” and then he shut up because he didn’t want to think about Ville right now!
“I’m going.” He just added and walked to the door, just when he was closing it he heard Dunn shout after him.
“Get rid of that virginity of yours, okay? It would make you less uptight.”
-----------
Ville had a headache. The girls had been grating on his nerves all day, their high voices making him wince, their lyrics making him want to puke and their general cheerfulness making him want to pound his head against the wall. So he had just told them to shut up for a while and played some of his favorite music and told them to take notes on things they liked and disliked and that they’d discuss them tomorrow.
Now he just wanted to climb into bed and never come out. In his room he found Ryan sitting on the windowsill smoking and Ville was happy to join the blond. He stole the lit cigarette from the boy’s lips and took a deep breath.
“You look like you need something to cheer you up? Well I got some juicy gossip if you’re interested?” Ryan asked grinning and took the smoke back from Ville.
Ville leaned his back against the wall and nodded. “Okay tell me.”
“Bam has a date tonight.” Ryan blurted and sat there beaming like an eager puppy.
Ville felt his own expression fall and got up to search for his own smokes to hide his feelings from Ryan. There was no need to tip Bam’s friend off anything being wrong. “Oh really, with who?” he asked feigning nonchalance, but his hands were shaking as he tried to light his smoke.
“He wouldn’t tell me.” Ryan said and pouted, still obviously amused. “I just hope he ends up getting laid, because damn, it can’t be healthy to remain a virgin this long.”
Ville wasn’t really listening to Ryan anymore. He needed to think, needed to get away from Ryan. “Uh, I forgot my notebook in the class room, see you around Ryan.” He said and walked out the room still smoking, right now he couldn’t care less if someone saw him and ratted him out.
Standing outside the building for a moment, unsure what he should do Ville just let his feet take him to one of the pathways that circled the camp site. During the day they were used by the riders and people who needed to jog as a part of their training, but now during the afternoon free periods they were pretty deserted, except for couples who wanted to have some privacy and came to walk into the woods. Ville hoped that some fesh air would cure his headache and help him get rid of the jealousy that was tightening his chest.
