Oh, reading this absolutely killed me. You touched on so many things I thought myself - him being completely shell-shocked by the developments, all his guilt and doubts, the very realistic idea that sooner or later Arthur will have to hold judgment over a magic user and how will he treat him. But above all, it was this:

He was mourning that man, his friend, as he was mourning the hope he's clung to for years: when Arthur was king, everything would change, he wouldn't have to hide who he was anymore, and he would be able to show his true self to Arthur.

So heartbreaking and beautiful - he lost both, the old Arthur and his hope, and I was mourning with him. Luckily not everything had changed, as we could see later on, but in that moment, all seemed lost.

You captured all of that beautifully - well done! :)

I was tempted to change some bits before posting the fic, knowing what we know now, but I left it as it is, because those were Merlin's feelings - and my thoughts - at that moment.

Sadly no, it's not the beginning of anything, just me trying to get into Merlin's head. There's another one along those lines (end of 3x13) that is going to be posted once it's betaed, though.
Sorry, I know the frustration of reading short stories, but it's all I seem to be able to write!

I know the problem except backwards. :D I seem only capable of thinking up rediculously long stories that I rarely have the time to finish. :P

I have countless unfinished stories in various fandoms which should have had an epic novel-length, lol. So now I try to write short stories that I'm at least able to finish!

I could pretend that the parallels between Uther/Gaius and Arthur/Merlin were done consciously but I'd be lying through my teeth! I wasn't aware of what I had done until you pointed it out so thank you!
The possibility is slightly frightening but Arthur and Merlin are very different from their counterparts so I don't think it'll really happen. If only because I don't see Merlin sticking by Arthur and saying nothing if he started to execute magic users.

That episode made me cry buckets so I had to channel the feeling, somehow. Very glad you liked it, it means a lot to have reviews like this :o)

I don't see Merlin leaving if Arthur went all Uthery. I can see him telling Arthur how f*cking wrong he is. It's Merlin who thinks he'll leave. I think he just wouldn't be able to let Arthur become like his father, he loves him too much for that.

Is that fanvid on YT? I'm curious now!

I felt so bad for MErlin. His hopes and dreams for the future was in tatters. It must have been very hard for him to cope. Good job with this.
