Summary: Sam POV. Sam discovers they've been brought to Seattle for a reason.

It was irritating to feel the focus of Max's mind try to subdue him.

Sam could tell in one moment that whatever training she might have picked up hadn’t done her any good against a power like him. The feeble attempt was nothing but a sickening surge of pain that was more detrimental to herself than it had been to him. It lasted for less than a few seconds before she gave up and decided to disable Sam the good old fashioned way. He wasn’t entirely sure why he allowed her to pull him away from Dean. Studying her face, he winced when the metal of the cuff clamped tight around his wrist while the other was looped to a radiator.

She had a beautiful face.

Despite all Ames White’s efforts to damage her body, she had healed as if nothing horrible had ever befallen her at all.

“Dean?“ she pulled off one of her gloves to check the pulse at his throat. “Dean Winchester?”

“Don’t bother,“ Sam told her. “He’s fine.”

Dean was fine, but Dean was gone, still being force fed pure confusion by Sam and who knew what else from Alec one floor below. The foggy static didn’t work on Max but Sam knew that without even trying. He also knew that any hand to hand combat with this girl would result in his loss or his death. Max smacked Dean a few times across the face when she still didn’t receive an answer. Another set of handcuffs appeared and she quickly rolled Dean over. Kneeling between his shoulder blades, she made sure to bind his brother even more carefully than she had Sam.

Max stood and paused at the top of the basement stairs.

“You might want to be careful,” Sam said. “Alec isn’t quite himself.”

Max smiled at him. It was a real smile, the kind that would usually make a man like Sam blush when a pretty girl like her gave him one. But there was something different about it made him study her more closely. His own gaze narrowed at the sound of her soft laugh and the carefree way she shook back her silky hair.

“I know how he feels,” she said. “There seems to be a lot of that going around these days.”

Sam watched those big brown eyes of hers turn a solid pearly black.

“How about you?” she asked. “You look in a mirror lately?”

He wasn’t startled when part of the wall broke free and swung in their direction as if it were sitting on hinges. A water pipe groaned and hissed as it snapped, spraying cold water into the hot air. The wall now facing Sam had an old mirror hanging lopsidedly on it and hanging its cord. At first all Sam could see were the streaks of blood across his bare chest from his struggles with Alec. It was a shame to see the rips in the PJ bottoms that he’d taken from a hospital once and never thrown away. But what Max had really wanted him to see was the dull gleam of his eyes.

His gold tinted eyes.

“Those sure are pretty, Sam,” she said. “Can’t get a pair like those any old place now can ya?”

“No,” Sam agreed. “You can’t.”

The pools of black in her eyes swirled and danced with her grin.

“I’ll have to destroy you,” Sam told her. “I can do it without any weapons.”

“What and send me to hell?” she rolled her eyes. “No need for that because I’m not one of the bad guys, Sam. I’m just using what I got. No harm in that now, is there?”

It felt strange at first because Sam had never let anyone do it besides Alec. But when he realized all Max was trying to do was explain, he slowly let her mind make its clumsy connection with his own. The first thing Sam saw was the near effortless way they’d arrived into the city just a few days beforehand. Sector check by sector check with barely any hassle outside the usual cash bribes. He saw the way Alec had unexpectedly found the last piece of the puzzle to locate the hacker they wanted to meet so badly. Sam suddenly realized how all those things could happen just like magic if you had a guy like Eyes Only on your side.

“You could have just called,” Sam said. “We’ve been meaning to come back and visit anyway.”

Max’s smile shifted into something else.

“You got to Alec somehow,” the chain on the cuff jerked Sam backwards as he stepped closer to her. “You put him into heat.”

“It got your attention didn’t it?”

Sam felt his anger flare dangerously under the fine line of his control, but it didn’t arc out and incinerate her where she stood.

“Wait right here, Sam. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Sam listened to her walk down the steps much more cautiously than she’d come through the front door. As he suspected, the scent of a female X5 hit Alec like an atomic bomb. Alec’s reception to her presence shuddered up through the floor and the ceiling like an earthquake, shaking the chandeliers and knocking things off the walls. A small tremor remained, vibrating the house slightly as if Alec’s nervous energy was extended into everything around him. Sam broke out in a cold sweat, the sensation of Alec’s desperate hope leaving him light headed and dizzy. Dean abruptly roused, rolling over on the floor and quickly aware that he had been restrained. With his hands pinned behind his back, he was now a mirror image of his nephew struggling below them in the basement.

“S-Sammy?” Dean’s voice was hoarse. “You there?”

Dean’s eyes were unfocused and, Sam suddenly realized, blinded. He knew it was Sam who was at his side but that was where his knowledge of the situation ended. Dropping the handcuffs on the floor, Sam rubbed at his wrist where the metal had cinched too tight. Kneeling beside his brother, Sam helped him sit up and explored the simple lock that kept Dean‘s hands trapped.

“Where’d she go?” Dean asked.

Sam turned his attention down to the basement below, the indistinct sounds incidental to what he could perceive perfectly in his son’s mind.

“She’s with Alec,” Sam said. “I think we should stay up here.”

Dean was suddenly struggling to stand up, his breathing angry and frantic.

“Don’t worry, Dean,” Sam told him. “I won‘t let anything happen to him. I won’t let anything happen to you either.” As Dean shook in his arms, Sam realized how his brother was so fragile compared to the power that thrummed in his own blood. In Alec’s blood too. “Something’s changed, Dean. Can't you feel it?"

"W-What?" Dean stammered. "Feel what?"

The light looked different, every color was off like the sun had just set. All the shadows had grown too long and stretched in all the wrong directions. Even Dean’s skin looked strange. Sam touched it, his fingers tracing the familiar curve of his mouth and the line of his jaw. When his brother blinked up at him, Sam gasped in surprise at the shocking green of his eyes. It was as if all the world was fine tuned just for him, every sight, sound, and smell...

“L-Let me go, Sammy,” Dean yanked hard on his trapped hands. “First you gotta let me go.”

“Not yet, Dean.”

“Okay, then just listen! Can you just listen? Alec can make us see stuff. Hell, he can make us feel stuff too and I think you’re so wired in that he’s making you think like he is. I already called Bobby and a few other people in town and they can help you okay? You just got to try to keep it together Sam, you have to hold on--ah!”

Sam didn’t realize he was mesmerized by Dean’s voice until the words contained inside the pleasing noise began to annoy him. His eyes shut as he felt Max and Alec touch, their aching bodies melding into each other as they moved too hard and fast for a normal human being to withstand. Every touch was met and anticipated, every kiss received like a bruise on bloodied skin. Sam opened his eyes to see if his brother was able to feel them too, but instead of smiling, Dean had stilled in Sam's hands. Letting out a small whimper of disbelief, Dean seemed to be regaining his ability to see.

And he was looking right at Sam.

“Your eyes, Sammy,” Dean said. “Your eyes.”

Sam studied his brother in hurt confusion. Couldn’t Dean see the glisten of gold was nothing to be scared of? It had always been there anyway, just out of sight and hiding behind the mundane colors of his morality. His brother being afraid of him made absolutely no sense. Who knew Dean more completely? Who understood the hunt more perfectly? Who better than Sam comprehended the dangers of sharing blood with the enemy, and the risk of using it wrongly?

Like Max.

Sam was very eager to speak to Logan. Apparently, Eyes Only had decided to take what Manticore had given its soldiers and somehow use it against them. The idea made Sam’s insides glow.

“Sammy,” Dean said. “I promise you we'll figure this out.”

He stared at his brother in incomprehension for a second before he let out a short laugh. It was going to be more than okay. In fact, for the first time in a long time Sam thought things just might be starting to look up for a change.

And it was about time.
