god i hope nobody else is doing this drama otherwise i WILL slam my head through a wall

hello everyone, I've decided to start subbing chaka's drama Risky! here's the summary from dramawiki:

Kuroda Mika began to experience various mysterious events and received a message about her being monitored. All these happened after she announced her engagement with Sakurai Toru. Apparently, this is the beginning of the horrifying revenge plan by Hinata, who is the sister of Toru's former fiancée.

What is the story behind the revenge and who will get to laugh at the end?

My subs are timed to the NSBC raws, which can be found here. Instructions on how to download the raw files can be found here. Ep 1 is timed to the HDTV version; the others will be timed to the WEB-DL version.

You can find the most current version of subs for all episodes in this mega folder here. The previous, initial versions can still be found in the folder titled v0 at the link above. For episodes 2-6 this mostly consists of font style changes to better indicate flashbacks etc. Episode 1 has been retimed to the WEB-DL version; the old HDTV version can still be found in the v0 folder.

Ep 2 translation notes: (highlight to read)

the specific word kouta uses when he tells mika he doesn't want to sleep with her is 抱きしめる, which quite literally means "to embrace", "to hold", or "to hug" but colloquially also means "to sleep with" and is often used ambiguously to sort of mean both at the same time. when kouta uses it with mika it's pretty clear that he means it in a sexual way, but that line playing when he hugs hinata isn't a coincidence - but unfortunately, english doesn't really have a word that has the same dual meaning. embrace is probably the closest, but it's also not really natural sounding, so i went with "to hold".

Ep 4 specific TWs: kidnapping, attempted sexual assault (highlight for more detail and timestamps)

a female character is kidnapped by strangers; this was orchestrate by another female character. the men who kidnapped her attempt to sexually assault her but the episode ends before anything occurs and we are left unsure of what happens next. this starts at approximately 21:15 in the NSBC raws and continues until 23:40.

Ep 5 specific TWs: kidnapping, attempted sexual assault, sexual assault (highlight for details and timestamps)

the end of the situation regarding the female character from the end of episode 4 is shown; the men do attempt to rape her but are stopped. this is shown from approximately 1:05 to 1:25 and 2:31 to 4:45 in the NSBC raws.

another female character consents to sex with another male character, but said male character invites other men that she does not know who rape her, which is all filmed by the first male character. this starts at approximately 8:01 to 9:17 in the NSBC raws.

Ep 5 translation notes (highlight to read):

i actually have no clue how their parents' names are read; we haven't been told in the show and their names are both pretty common and can be read multiple ways so i just picked readings that sounded vaguely age appropriate because i didn't want to go find a list of like, "most popular japanese baby names from the 1950s" to try and puzzle this out any further lol sorry

Ep 6 specific TWs: attempted suicide (highlight for more detail and approximate times):

a character attempts suicide by trying to cut their wrists with a blade but is stopped; this is at the beginning of the episode. at the end of the episode a different character attempts suicide by stepping in front of a moving vehicle; we are left unsure of their fate in the narrative but the episode preview that plays right after informs us that this character lives but is hospitalized.

Ep 7 translation notes (highlight to read):

chikuzen-ni is also known as game-ni and is a traditional japanese dish of simmered chicken and vegetables such as carrots, lotus root, and burdock root.
Ep 7 specific TWs: suicidal ideation (highlight for more detail and approximate times):

a character asks another character to commit suicide with them; the second character pretends to follow through but the first stops them while still expressing their own wish to die. this happens at approximately 11:31 to 11:27 in the NSBC raws.

A few notes:
  • this is my first time ever subtitling something; i'm nominally a scanslator by trade so these may be rough - i'm still learning as i go!
  • i will try and have every ep up within a week of its airing on tver.jp, but i can't guarantee anything - the busy season just started at my job and no one in this industry has work-life balance (lol)
  • my translation of this series is very idiomatic. more than anything I really wanted to capture the feel of what the characters were saying and convey it in a way that flowed naturally in english. if you have issues with the direction i took or questions about choices i made in the TL, I'm more than happy to have a discussion about this, but I stand by the choices I made.
