Minako-chan's New Job

May 10, 2010 19:39

I don't want to say too much about my new job in public (which is unfortunate, because it's the details that make this story actually really freaking funny), but suffice to say, it's a small-ish, new-ish company that's basically a spin-off of a larger company, which means that we get the benefits of bright-eyed youth while still enjoying a kick-ass ( Read more... )

Congrats on the new job!
I swear I need to get back out there and visit you and John one of these days. What part of Japan are you guys living in these days?

We're both still in the Tokyo area. You should come! We could visit Lolita shops in Harajuku for old time's sake!

I really want to. This year is out though since all my vacation time is spoken for. I need to keep an eye on the airfare. That's the big expense, really.

Yay for new job!
Yay for you still being in Japan, as it's fascinating to read about!
Yay for space toilets and women-only cars and being able to sit down (and read?).

Purity of the English language: you'd enjoy listening to Stephen Fry's radio series on that, of which I've bought myself the second cd compilation, but which you could download as .wma at whsmith.co.uk, they sell worldwide. There are episodes like The Joy of Gibberish and So Wrong It's Right ^^

That actually sounds awesome. ^_^ I'm not normally into radio series (I'm very much a non-aural learner, so I sometimes have trouble focusing when there's only sound), but Stephen Fry talking about English? That sounds totally awesome. I'll probably pick it up. (And then make sure that there's absolutely nothing around to visually distract me when I listen!) Thanks for the rec!

(And I noticed that you even gave the Amazon link to the Amazon.co.jp site... you're always too kind!)

kind? Awwww, I'm your friendly neighbourhood media pusher ^^ estara May 11 2010, 12:47:44 UTC
It IS - Awesome, I mean. Incredibly enjoyable.

I'm going to buy the first series, too and there'll be a third series released this autumn. They always seem to have four episodes of half an hour each per series. If you click on the whsmith link they usually have about 2 minutes of preview, which is a bit better than that half a minute at Amazon.

You reap the benefits of the fact that I don't live with people who enjoy English much (not being English speakers themselves) and I have no one in real life to geek over this with, heh ^^.

And I really enjoy your posts on your life in Japan, so it makes me feel more balanced if you get some enjoyment out of stuff I've discovered.

Being single, I sometimes simply put the series on when I've turned out the lights for the night but don't want to sleep yet.

So I've compiled the first episode of the second season into an mp3 zip-file - you'll get more of an impression then so you can decide whether you actually want to put money down. Here's the link:

Good points all around, my darling linguist. Your forgiving nature allows you to survive on the internet without grammar anger aneurysms.

My latest language flail? Glancing over a list of phrasal verbs gathered off the net, they had the phrasal verb "be on". And one of the uses they gave? "The computer is on." ...... Am I going insane? That's.... not how phrasal verbs work... right?
