'You sharin'?'

A pair of boots land on the bar next to her, followed closely by a body sliding onto the stool.

It's not said with his usual brash confidence. More an honest question, really. He does look a bit worn out.

And the boots get poked.

'What're these about, then?'

"Helluva sense of timin', yours."

In other words: good to see you, Gene.

He gets a quick once-over - definitely not his usual dress - and Kate reaches for a couple of glasses without another word. She pours them both more than a healthy measure of liquor, and slides the cupcake closer to him along with his glass.

"Can't have you in Texas wearin' those."

She nods at his white loafers. At least those haven't changed.

'Smell a bottle a mile away,' he says, without pride.

He looks down at his beloved loafers.

'S'pose not.'

Even he has to concede that they'd look a bit out of place. Just marginally, though.

'You alright, then? No problems out there?'

He nods to the door. His general air is like they only talked yesterday, like no time at all has passed.

It takes her a little longer than usual to pick up on how differently he's acting. Granted, with Gene it's always a crapshoot as to which side of him she'll get at any given time, but he's ... good lord, he's practically quiet.

She eyes him over the rim of her glass, eyes narrowing slightly  -  and not just because of the pleasant burn of bourbon down her throat.

"No. Well ... Nothin' I couldn't handle."

Beat.

"An' you? Been gone someplace?"

"Happy Birthday." Carlotta says, coming over on her crutches and seeing the cake, though missing the reason. She sits down nearby, keeping the cast tucked in.

"No, can't be birthday..." she adds, seeing the cake closer up.

Her lips twitch.

"I s'pose, as a woman, I should take it as a compliment that y'see me as young. Though, perhaps not this young," she says, removing the candle from the cupcake.

She glances sideways at Carlotta. It's been a while.

"What on earth have y'done t'yourself, honey?"

"You are young, just not three, I'd guess."

Carlotta hesitates. She's been telling most people it was an accident, but Kate has that teacher's air to her that makes her not want to tell untruths.

"I was shot. While helping the war effort."

Any other smalltalk that might have come to mind is quickly whisked away.

"Shot?"

Her eyes go wide.

"Sugar, what's a girl like you doin' in a war?"

"You're back!" Scorpius first exclaims upon seeing Kate, pleased.

He then quickly grabs the bottle of bourbon before she can touch it.

"Flight first, drinking after. Bar, could I borrow a Tinderblast?"

The broom appears on the counter as requested.

Kate isn't entirely certain what happened. Either a tornado just ripped through the bar, blowing away her center (along with a very fine bourbon, thankyouverymuch), or Scorpius Malfoy just joined her.

"Master Scorpius, has anybody ever told you it ain't right takin' what's not yours?" she asks, trying her best at being scolding.

It's not entirely effective.

"What - flight? Now?"

"I'm not taking it, I'm only holding on to it. But if you'd like to share it after our flight, we could do that," he says with the utmost innocence.

"And yes, flight now. Unless you'd like to finish your cupcake... Is it your birthday?"

The candle is a bit confusing, if it is.

"You cheeky lil' rapscallion."

Now she can't help but look amused, and it is a pleasant relief.

"We'll see if I'll be in the sharin' mood later on. It ain't my birthday, it's - "

She shrugs, pinching out the flame and pushing the cupcake a ways away.

"Three years since I walked in for the first time. An ... anniversary of sorts. Or two."

"Oooh! Cupcake! Do you think there's more?"

Bridgette notices at once, especially as it's the cowboy lady who looks like her mom.

Kate turns her focus to the girl, then glances at the cupcake and smiles wanly.

"Here, sugar..."

She picks it up, blowing out the candle and plucking it from the chocolate frosting.

"Y'can have it."

"No, it's yours!" Bridgette says. "What was it for? Is it your birthday? Happy birthday, Miss Barlow!"

She chuckles halfheartedly.

"I'm a lil' older than that," she says teasingly. "It's my anniversary. Our anniversary, I guess."

She pats the Bar. Another cupcake pops up, like Kate's but with an extra dose of sprinkles and a glass of milk to substitute the bourbon.

"Well, lookit that. Now you gotta sit an' join me."

Horror.

The bruise on William's face is getting lighter but its still colorful as he comes in through the front door and orders a root beer float at Bar.

He spots Kate and grins with a small wince, "What's the occasion?"

Oh, you are not weaseling your way out of that one, William Evans.

"What on earth have y'gotten into now?"

Her gaze is firmly fixed on that bruise.

"More fights at school?"

He looks into his float and says quickly,

"No on the Fourth, it ain't that bad."

Kate looks unconvinced in that way women are very good at when it comes to their men. This stretches to their adoptive family.

"I know I have issues with the Fourth, but what're yours?"
