"No, they're always sayin' stuff and I try and not let it get too bad. They just went too far was all,"
There were jokes about his father losing his leg and Ben Wade and hitting was the only thing that made William feel better but they got pulled apart quick.
Filling her glass with bourbon, she takes a drink and gently taps the Bar. An electric blue curly straw pops up, along with a plate of shortbread cookies.
"Rootbeer floats are best when y'have the proper straw," she informs him, passing over the ridiculously-shaped item. "You wanna talk about it?"
He takes a cookie and starts eating it as it saves having to look at her,
"They ain't goin' to stop what they're sayin' cause I'm the only one who knows what happened in Contention. The Pink got there when it was all over and done."
"Lots of fools in Bisbee. That my Ma's goin' to end up with Wade, that Pa was actually workin' for Wade and got double crossed, there's always somethin' new."
"Pardon my indecency. You introduce 'em boys t'a woman named Esfir Shostakovna Yazycova, an' she'll set the record straight for certain. Miss Esfir doesn't suffer fools, an' she's Ben's real object of affection."
"I've said worse, Miss Barlow and usually added a punch. Thank you, I didn't know that, not sure it'd matter to them and we know the truth. Its just wearin' cause no one wants to think the best. I didn't always understand my Pa, but he did what needed to be done to keep us afloat."
"They write about Wade which always gets folks talkin'. When it happened, there wasn't much in the paper as it made everyone look like fools. Wade got on the train, but his gang was dead, and my Pa'd been killed by Charlie Prince. It didn't tie up pretty so Pa got an obit in the paper that Ma and I wrote and that was it. Then Wade escaped from Yuma and Pa's just another man left in the dirt."
He spots Kate and grins with a small wince, "What's the occasion?"

"What on earth have y'gotten into now?"

"More fights at school?"

And, suddenly, she chortles.
"No one wants t'think the best."
Yeah, that's for damn certain.
"Do the papers write about it?"

Just another man left in the dirt.
"That's the way it is with Ben's kind."
Her voice is quiet.
