Kate comes downstairs and approaches the Bar, looking tired and a little worn. Her hair is pleated, her typical cowboy hat left upstairs ( Read more... )

"Oooh! Cupcake! Do you think there's more?"

Bridgette notices at once, especially as it's the cowboy lady who looks like her mom.

Kate turns her focus to the girl, then glances at the cupcake and smiles wanly.

"Here, sugar..."

She picks it up, blowing out the candle and plucking it from the chocolate frosting.

"Y'can have it."

"No, it's yours!" Bridgette says. "What was it for? Is it your birthday? Happy birthday, Miss Barlow!"

She chuckles halfheartedly.

"I'm a lil' older than that," she says teasingly. "It's my anniversary. Our anniversary, I guess."

She pats the Bar. Another cupcake pops up, like Kate's but with an extra dose of sprinkles and a glass of milk to substitute the bourbon.

"Well, lookit that. Now you gotta sit an' join me."

Horror.

Bridgette climbs up on the stool, very cheerful.

"Thank you!" she says. "I met a cowboy boy here the other day, it was Independence Day, and he says he's going to teach me to ride. On a horse!"

"Did you now? Was his name William?"

It sounds like just the sort of thing young Master Evans would do.

She uncorks her bourbon, and pours herself a glass.

"Yes!" Bridgette says. "He's from Bisbee! Imagine that. It's not a posh place in his time yet. In my time, it's all historic and things. But I guess he's historic as well. I'm going to interview him for history class and then say I invented him."

She chokes on a surprised laugh.

It's minds like these that will one day rule the world.

"How very sneaky. Funny, thinkin' of William as 'historic'."

Like thinking of herself - of Green Lake, and her Texas - as historic.

"Have y'never been on a horse before?"

"Oh, at fairs, where they put kids on horses and lead them in circles, you know the way they do?" Bridgette says.

Beat.

"Well, probably you don't. Horses weren't anything special back in the Old West."

"Pony rides?"

She smirks.

"We do those, time t'time. Not quite as you've described, an' by your age I was ridin' a horse on my own. But they're very important animals, where I'm from. Folks can't hardly live without 'em."

She sips at her bourbon.

"I'm sure Master William will be a very good teacher."

"Do you know him well?" Bridgette asks.

"He's a good friend. A very good young man."

She punctuates her remarks with steady sips from her drink.

"It's been jus' about a year, an' he's recently started workin' at the stables with me, so I've had the opportunity t'get t'know him a lil' better. He's trustworthy, don't you worry none."

"Good," Bridgette says. "He was nice. He was in a fight, though!"

Her eyes sharpen.

"He was. But not with you, I hope."

Bridgette giggles. "Oh no," she says. "Back in Bisbee when it was historic, on Independence Day. Some sort of trouble with some other boy."

"Good."

She leans in, her eyes narrowing seriously, and drops her voice to a conspiratorial hum.

"Any boy ever gives you trouble, no matter how nice he seems t'be, y'give 'im trouble right back. Y'hear?"

Her lips twitch and she nods once, as if that is that.

"He's been in scraps before. They're good for young men, believe it or not."
