Puck came downstairs this evening to discover a strange present.

He has now sniffed at it, and turned it over in his hands, and admired its coruscating qualities. The real fun begins, however, when his fingers come upon a small movable piece in the device.

Hrrrmmmmmmmmm--Puck drops the toy as if it's burned him and stares with wide, slightly wary ( Read more... )

Over by the fireplace, unaware of what's going on behind them, Duo and River are sitting on one of the couches. They are tucked in close to each other, shoulders just touching.

Duo is waving his hands around, expounding on something. (River is probably telling him he's wrong.)

Puck has by now more or less figured out the mysterious whirring demon that River has seen fit to give him as a present. It gets a lot quieter when you cover it with a thick ceramic bowl.

Leaving it thus trapped on the Bar, with a stern plea that no one be allowed near it as it is his present, Puck has begun to scour the bar for the gift's giver.

... Aha!

Huh?

Duo leans in to grin at her, obviously teasing. His bangs brush against her hair. They'd only need to get a few inches closer to kiss.

Havelock has no helpful ideas.

He could maybe assassinate it if need be?

For the moment, though, he's just sitting nearby and eyeing the thing in stonefaced judgement.

"Havelock!" Puck brightens, over the hrrrmmmmmm of the sparkling demon.

The noise is really very intriguing.

"River Tam has given me a gift."

Well, that makes it marginally less likely to be deadly.

Now it is just inexplicable!

"So I see," he says, still eyeing it. "Is it alive?"

Puck eyes it as well, appraisingly.

"As to that," he says, cautious, "I have not asked it."

Someone with sleek black fur and vivid green eyes is watching the dropped toy with Great Interest.

Puck, for his part, glances up at the interloper.

(mmmmmzzzzmmm)

At least this newcomer seems to share his sense of priority.

If the cat notices it's being watched as well, it gives no sign. It simply crouches down lower, tail twitching in anticipation of the pounce.

Okay, Puck's gotta see this.

Even if he's not a hundred percent sure he wants Macavity the Mystery Cat to trounce all over his present, freakish and infernal though it is.

Someone with vivid red hair and red eyes is also watching the dropped toy with Great Interest.

Hopefully from a vantage point where she can't see a fellow observer.

Puck glances to this other observer, then down at the shimmering purring whirring thing, then back to her.

"Do you make aught of it?" he asks politely.

"Is it a mouse? Is it injured?"

It isn't scurrying away. It is an odd thing.

"It is no mouse," Puck says slowly.

"And I can see no wound on't."

His tone is dubious enough that it's unclear what he makes of these findings. Meanwhile, the thing has begun a jittering, abortive path around the countertop.
