Puck came downstairs this evening to discover a strange present.

He has now sniffed at it, and turned it over in his hands, and admired its coruscating qualities. The real fun begins, however, when his fingers come upon a small movable piece in the device.

Hrrrmmmmmmmmm--Puck drops the toy as if it's burned him and stares with wide, slightly wary

Over by the fireplace, unaware of what's going on behind them, Duo and River are sitting on one of the couches. They are tucked in close to each other, shoulders just touching.

Duo is waving his hands around, expounding on something. (River is probably telling him he's wrong.)

Well, he is.

Puck has by now more or less figured out the mysterious whirring demon that River has seen fit to give him as a present. It gets a lot quieter when you cover it with a thick ceramic bowl.

Leaving it thus trapped on the Bar, with a stern plea that no one be allowed near it as it is his present, Puck has begun to scour the bar for the gift's giver.

... Aha!

Duo leans in to grin at her, obviously teasing. His bangs brush against her hair. They'd only need to get a few inches closer to kiss.

You know who would also only need to be a few inches closer to kiss River?

Puck! From his new and surprising location flung over the couch behind them, fingers gripping the cushion as one might a balcony rail.

"Master Maxwell, what are you about?"

"AHHHHHH."

Duo is no longer on the couch. He thankfully did not fall off it, but if he had jumped any higher, he might have landed in the rafters.

River stares reproachfully at Puck.

"Try hello."

YOU'RE WELCOME FOR THE SHINY PRESENT, GEEZ.

[puckishly]

Puck stares reproachfully at River.

"Really, mistress, you oughtn't to allow it. 'Tis altogether too bold; I doubt sauce of that color shall lend much savor to yours."

"CHRIST, Puck. A little warning next time? Maybe? You're lucky I didn't have my freaking gun, I might have shot you!"

Not on purpose (mostly) but still!

"It's not a democracy," River says patiently.

Puck, your social skills need work again. (This is only sort of a pot-and-kettle situation.)

"Nobody's dinner."

[puckishly]

"I find democracy a perfectly abhorrent sort of arrangement," Puck sniffs.

He glances briefly to Duo-- in distaste and some polite bafflement at the fact that he is apparently saying words-- then back to River.

"Are they not? I think I am delighted. Such meat should spoil your stomach."

...Duo senses he is being ignored.

He sits back down on the couch and smiles at River.

"Tell him we already made out."

[puckishly]

Puck makes a noise a little like what you might expect of a cat whose tail has become caught in a blender.

"It's rude to overshare," River says primly.

(Never ask River how much of Puck and Havelock's relationship she knows about. SHE DOESN'T WANT TO KNOW EITHER.)

"It's polite to let people know your relationship status has changed," Duo says, not smug at all.

[puckishly]

Puck's eyes narrow.

He's so getting Duo back for that.

"Is it polite," he says, frowning drearily, "to kiss a young maid before you have asked for her hand? River darling, has he asked? For you shan't recover it if he takes it for his own, and I do so love you better when you've both."
