[OOM: Martha Jones has a hell of a day, and a hell of an evening. Luckily, there’s a scruffy time-traveller who can give her a bit of time off.]

“Ta-da!”

The Doctor steps into the bar and holds the door open for Martha to step through. “Welcome to Milliways, the bar at the end of the universe!”

"This is usually my big finish," he notes. "So, all right, I still owe you a trip. Fair enough?"

"Perish the thought. No, I think you and Ace would get along famously."

"We can only hope." She laughs. "Is Ace a guy or a girl?"

[thedoctorwho]

"Girl," he says. "Well, 'woman', if you want to get technical. Well, 'married woman' if you want to get really technical."

"I expect she'd prefer it," Martha agrees. "Although maybe not, depending what she's like."

[thedoctorwho]

"I expect she would, too. She's quite the empowered sort. And much older than she looks."

[took_a_year_out]

"I'll bear it in mind," Martha says cheerfully. "I think I like her already."

[thedoctorwho]

"One thing, though. If she yells duck, she's not kidding. Hit the floor."

Always good to get that out of the way up front.

"Duly noted."

Martha takes another drink of beer.

"Did she used to travel with you, then?"

[thedoctorwho]

"A lifetime or two ago, yeah. She got caught in a timestorm and thrown halfway across the galaxy and a few thousand years into her future. Found her waiting tables on Svartos and offered to give her a ride."

"A lifetime or two?" Martha tilts her head. "How old is she? And how old are you?"

He shrugs. "Time's funny here, I guess you've noticed. She's actually technically still well in my past."
