Saturday night happy hour

Apr 18, 2009 19:02

Ianto, as always, is pleased to find himself in Milliways, and takes a seat at the bar, anticipating an endless cup of coffee and a night of good talk.

The napkin that pops up is no surprise, though. He reads it and nods. "Absolutely, I can do that."

He goes behind the bar and thinks for a moment, then writes on the specials board:

Hmm.

Magic bar...

"Do you have butterbeer?"

"I've never heard of that," Ianto says honestly, "but I would bet we do." He checks the vast stores--and it takes a few minutes, because they are vast--and finds a tapped barrel marked "Butterbeer."

He fills a mug and sets in in front of the lad.

"I hope that's what you're thinking of."

"I hope so, too," he murmurs.

And lo, it is. Ianto is the recipient of a pleased grin. "Thank you."

"Good," says Ianto with a pleased grin of his own.

"Are you new to the bar?"

Bela spies the specials board and laughs.

"A friend of mine will be quite pleased to see that special. I, however, will take a dirty martini, extra olives."

Ianto tsks but gets out the shaker and gin anyway.

"Such limited imagination. You can do alcoholic things with coffee, you know."

"I know, I know. It's terribly sad. I'm dying for a martini, though."

"Oh, well, if you're dying . . ." He adds the vermouth and a tipple of olive juice, and shakes up the martini--to a perfect waltz rhythm, of course.

He pours it into a glass and adds two skewers of olives, two olives on each.

"Ma'am."

Ianto knows how Cal likes it.

Uh. Coffee. Likes - coffee.

Good thing it didn't occur to him to actually say anything other than, "Hey, Ianto," as he puts down a mug that is, as always, conveniently empty for Happy Hour.

"Hi, Cal," Ianto says, pleased. "Refill on that or something fresh?"

"Refill's good, thanks," Cal says. "Been a while on this side of the Door." He's getting used to that - one of the odd quirks of being Bound is learning not to really concern himself about the passage of time in relation to people who aren't. "How've you been?"

"Coffee with sugar, right? Forgive me, it's been a while."

He shrugs. "Just fine. Life goes on, as it will. Getting used to the new girl, drinking a lot of coffee."

There is a man pondering the specials board, short as it is.

Possibly he is wondering how to make 'coffee' into 'sake' without Ianto noticing.

Possibly he is very sure he could pull it off.

Possibly he is waiting for the right moment.

Very possibly he should be distracted.

If he orders sake, Ianto probably won't mock him.

Probably. That's so... uncertain a term.

Urahara does so like certainty. Even if it's only on his own terms. Makes the game so much more fun that way.

And no, that sudden quirk of a grin means nothing ominous. At all. Really.

"Can I help you?" Ianto says, because a quiet grinning guy is a little . . . nervewracking.

A lady who Ianto might recognize from a previous encounter slides onto a bar stool.

It has been a while, but Ianto still smiles when he sees her. "Urania! Right?"

"Good to see you too." He holds up his hands. "Bar has called on me a few times. I suspect when she thinks people need to be kept awake a few more hours."
