"Bad day?" intones a casual British voice from a nearby table.

Oh, for crap's sake.

"Lady, even my good days are bad days. I swear to God, this job is gonna kill me before I turn 40."

Internally, Josh manages a double-take. He tries to be subtle about it, though. That... is not the kind of woman you see around the White House.

Emma Peel is not the kind of woman you see around anywhere, unless you happen to hang around a swinging set of 1960's British jet setters. The double-take makes Emma smirk, not much more. "Perhaps you should find another job."

"I don't need a new job, I need a new staff. They're the ones who are disorganized and contrary, not me."

Also, there's this freaking bar that appears out of nowhere. Josh quashes the desire to kick something with very bad grace indeed.

Back on the other side of the door, Dean's asleep.

Sam hadn't been able; he's still trying to figure out how to tell his brother about the message on their dad's phone, which is why he's now slouched in a booth in Milliways thinking about it.

The yelling gets his attention fast, however.

"Something wrong?"

"Yes, something is wrong! All my staffers can talk about is respect for the dead and drive-by shootings in Denver a hundred years ago, and I get stuck here while they inevitably run the country into the ground without me!"

Once he's gotten that all out, Josh realizes he's shouting at someone he doesn't know. Like, really doesn't know.

Like, a kid.

He furrows his brow, trying to regain some composure. "Not that I'm helping run the country into the ground. That was a little bit of fun with misplaced modifiers there."

"... right."

Sam offers him an easy smile, even if the look in his eyes is slightly speculative.

"If you don't mind my asking, what do drive-by shootings a hundred years ago have to do with the present day?"

"See, that? That is a very fair question."

There is certainly nothing agitated in that response. "Agitated" isn't even in Josh's vocabulary. Any more than his picture appears next to it in the dictionary.

"You wouldn't happen to want a job working at the White House, would you? Because that is entirely the kind of good sense my office is severely lacking today."

At about the same time, Josh is cursing, a rather colorful man is shouting happily over a piece of paper,

"Leap year!"

...which definitely makes Josh stop and stare in horror.

"Oh God," he groans, "one loony bin to another."

The Pirate King is in a good mood so he grins at Josh,

"Stop that horrid groaning and come drink with me."

Josh frowns. And maybe starts to edge away.

"Thanks, but... I think I'll pass. I don't know if it's good for my blood pressure."

"Damn what?" Charlie Crews asks.

His mouth is full of tangelo.

"Take your pick! For starters, whatever strand of Toby Ziegler's being that was off brooding while they were handing out the ability to make nice to Congressmen!"

It occurs to Josh that he may be either the only one who understands what he just said, or the only one who cares.

Then again, this is nothing new even at work.

Charlie swallows.

"I don't know, was the Congressman being nice? Sometimes they aren't. Like Gary Hart. I know a lot of people used to like him but I never did. And if the Congressman wasn't being nice I don't think you can really blame Toby Ziegler. He's just human. Unless he's not. But most people are. Unless you're here. Then again, you're here. Are you human?"

Josh heaves a sigh. "They weren't being nice, they were being obstinate, but that's not the point."

Blink.

"Okay, back on up. I feel like I just walked in and didn't get told it was Big Block of Cheese Day."
