"Damn what?" Charlie Crews asks.

His mouth is full of tangelo.

"Take your pick! For starters, whatever strand of Toby Ziegler's being that was off brooding while they were handing out the ability to make nice to Congressmen!"

It occurs to Josh that he may be either the only one who understands what he just said, or the only one who cares.

Charlie swallows.

"I don't know, was the Congressman being nice? Sometimes they aren't. Like Gary Hart. I know a lot of people used to like him but I never did. And if the Congressman wasn't being nice I don't think you can really blame Toby Ziegler. He's just human. Unless he's not. But most people are. Unless you're here. Then again, you're here. Are you human?"

Josh heaves a sigh. "They weren't being nice, they were being obstinate, but that's not the point."

Josh eyes him warily.

"You really think I could be not human?"

"Well," Charlie says, leaning back in his chair, "you could be human. You look human. And you act human. But what difference does it make if you're not? I mean, you're still a being in the universe, right? So that means you're entitled to the same care and respect as all beings in the universe. You're a being in the universe and I respect you." Beat. "I don't like cheese."
