The Doctor notices the sign about tabs when he comes downstairs from the library for some tea. He's had to depend on that tab system while he's been stuck here, not having access to the TARDIS to settle up accounts as usual ( Read more... )

One of the Doctor's feet might be warmer than the other.

Probably because it has a not'cat on it.

It takes him a minute to realize the temperature difference, but when he does, the Doctor peeks below the table to find the little furball curled up on his foot.

"Comfortable?" he asks wryly.

"Yep. The only thing that could make it better would be some scritches."

(Or fish or milk...)

That, Doctor, is an imploringly adorable look you are getting from the vicinity of your foot. Yrael has no shame.

"My arms are not quite long enough to accommodate and still keep my head above the table," he answers, giving Yrael a quick scritch behind the ear anyway. "And I do need to watch for possible customers. But if you want to hop into the seat beside me, that's another matter."

"That's an interesting sign you've got there."

Tall, dark-haired, good looking. Male. Late twentieth century clothing: jeans and a purple work shirt.

"How so?" he asks with a touch of confusion. "Seems pretty straightforward to me."

"The any era part. You'd have world walk to reach any era. I'm curious. What sort of technology are you familiar with, if you don't mind me asking?"

"I'll pay you for your time," he adds, gesturing towards the 'tips' bit.

"That's an awfully long list," the Doctor says, gesturing toward a chair. "But there's no need for money just to talk. You'll have to give me some context for your own world's technological level first, though."

So today? Inari felt like being bright and..well..colorful. More bright no matter which direction that you pointed at it. Which is the reason the harajuku dressed Goddess is rather bouncy about the bar in boots that are way to high and a skirt that is way to short.

Yay for urban street fashion!

Skipping by the Doctor's table she stops a few steps away, back-skipping up and bending over to look at the sign. Bright blue eyes read it over for a second before she asks. "Anything?"

The Doctor nods. "As long as it doesn't rely on magic to function. Pure electronics only. But other than that, I've yet to meet the gizmo I couldn't get going again."

Oh but the kitsune has! Which is why, sheepishly, the Goddess retrieves a rather..ah..broken looking ipod from the the side of her boot and slides it over toward the doctor. Blushing bright red she offers a large smile. "I tried to figure out how the musicians..um..got in there."

Of course by the brokeness of the blue ipod nano its obvious just how she was going to go about it. Yay daggers right?

"Can you fix it?"

He smiles at the innocence of the blush. "I see. That's a common problem when worlds collide around here. Let me see what I can do."

Accepting the iPod, he pries off the already battered case and takes a look at the circuit board.

A watch is slid across the table along with three twenty pound notes. The watch has obviously been physically broken; it's obvious by the long crack on the glass face. In fact, it's about five-minutes broken.

Sarah Jane stands there silently, heart pounding in her chest. Valerie clings to her mother, unaware of anything except her nap. He isn't exactly forgiven yet. But she's so very tired of fighting with him.

The Doctor looks up when the watch is placed before him and nods. He picks up the watch and sets to it with the sonic screwdriver. It's a simple matter to get the mechanics ticking again, takes only a moment.

He sets the watch back on top of the notes and slides them all back across the table to her. "I could close the crack in the face, but it wouldn't be as strong as if you just replace it," he explains. Then, he sighs, and his voice softens. "I don't want your money, Sarah Jane. You can always come to me when you need something. You earned that right long ago."

She looks at him, hoping he doesn't see the glint of tears in her eyes. She takes a breath, swallowing before speaking quietly:

"I thought I lost that right, Doctor."

"It's not a right that can be lost. No matter what else happens, that much is always there."

"Right so Ace would kill me if she knew I was asking, but I'm asking anyway because truth of the matter is that if you crooked your finger she'd go heading off into infinity with you anyway an' I'd never see her again and really that's alright," breath "with me because God knows I've got genetics informing me that I've got to follow da' even if he gives me orders that take me from her but that's rather besides the point and Ace loves you a hell of a lot and the you with the panama hat is the closest thing to a father she's ever really had so would you give her away at our," breath "wedding?"

It takes the Doctor a minute to mentally rewind that and play it back at a slower speed. Once he does that and understands what's being asked of him, he feels a spike of cold settle at the base of his spine.

He swallows down a lump and sighs. "I don't do domestics," he says simply. It was the answer he should have given Sarah Jane instead of lying to her. Maybe one day he'll be able to tell her that.

Spoon nods, just once, in a rattle of gold beads and resignation, "Right then. Thank you for the honesty. You understand I had to try, right? No hard feelings?"

He smiles then, a tight but honest smile. "I wish you both the best of luck and all the happiness you can stand. But the truth is -- and being a military man, you'll understand this -- I've lost so many people close to me. I just... can't anymore."
