The front door opens, and Ray slips in. For once, he's not covered in slime. Possibly the fact that he appears to be giving off smoke from several parts of his uniform jumpsuit might have something to do with that. It's something of an improvement, given that he doesn't actually appear to be on fire.Or at least, if he is, it's not enough of a fire ( Read more... )

Matilda, carrying a very large book, is also obtaining breakfast from the Bar (though not coffee). Once she has possession of said breakfast - a waffle with fresh fruit and three different kinds of syrup that looks as though it could easily compete for the title of Most Decadent Meal This Universe Has Ever Seen - she spots Ray and comes over to grin at him.

"Good morning! Why are you smoldering?"

Ray looks up from his own breakfast- it involves Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs- and smiles. "Because I just got done with a bust that involved a couple of Class Five free-roaming apparitions an overly excitable nine-year-old had summoned entirely by accident to make sure there wasn't a monster in the closet or under the bed. And, just my luck, they were spirits closely associated with elemental fire. I guess he wanted to burn the monsters out if there were any in hiding. Hi, Matilda."

"Well, as long as you've got everything sorted out. Out of curiosity, how does your apparition classification system work?" She gives him another grin and has a seat next to him with the Heavenly Waffle and the book, which is called Everything There Is To Know About Waffles.

"Mostly by power level and intelligence, which more often than not go hand in hand in my world," Ray says. "Not necessarily- for example, Great Cthulhu's power is completely off the charts, but any intelligence he has is pretty well incomprehensible to Terran humanity and can't properly be classified. It's basically a logarithmic scale based on observed power and behavior. Nice waffle."

Prue has a large book that she isn't going to let out of her sight and she has the coffee minus the breakfast. If his PKE meter is on it will more then likely go off as the spirit takes a seat next to him to get a refill on said coffee.

Ray generally doesn't leave the PKE meter on in Milliways if he can avoid it. There are too many magic powers and spirit entities at work in a place like this; it would be going off all the time. Kind of like that car alarm down the street, the one that sounds off if a cat brushes up against the car fender.

On the other hand, spirits without bodies have a tendency to lower the temperature in their immediate area, so Ray is looking around for the source of the sudden chill.

"Hi" the woman greets as she makes eye contact with the smuldering man whcich sadly to say she only just realized and her smile turns into a frown, "Are you okay?" dumb question perhaps but a good lead in none the less.

"Oh, yeah, I'm fine," Ray says cheerfully. "Hazard of the profession. Yourself?"

"oh, yeah," Ray says. "I just had an encounter with a couple of overenthusiastic fire spirits some poor kid had inadvertently summoned to get rid of nonexistent monsters under his bed. As soon as I'm out of smoke, it'll stop. Morning, sir. It's been a while, hasn't it?"

"It has." He raises his eyebrows. "The kid knew how to do that?"

"Not consciously," Ray says. "But he was a sensitive- he had some houngans in his ancestry or something- and he was in a state of extreme fear when a couple of fire spirits were passing through. They basically heard a raw, untrained shaman saying 'I need something to drive away my enemies', and you know how that kind of thing can be..."
