Arrived in Iquitos

Apr 21, 2011 21:14

Iquitos turns out to be the biggest city in the world, at least out of those not reachable by road. There certainly are vehicles here (mostly taxi things that look like two motorcycles strapped together with a buggy on top... I've forgotten what they're called) but presumably they came down (or up) the Amazon by boat... like pretty much everything ( Read more... )

That place sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. If I were there and had to pick one of the tours, I'd go for the one with the tiny froggies and lizards and pink dolphins. (Mermaids are a bonus.) The beds count for a lot in that situation, too. (Actually, if the only difference was that one tour had tiny froggies and the other one didn't, the frogs would win anyway.)

Have fun!

A tiny frog did land on my hand by accident. I got a couple of photos before it hopped away. Will post in due course.

@ appears to be meta Q, < > are "102" key, whatever *that* means.

Ah. Further reading reveals: To print the ">" key, hold down the right Alt key and type 062 in the numeric keypad.
To print the "<" key, hold down the right Alt key and type 060 in the numeric keypad.

Also, "102" key might be to the left of American KB 'z'.

HTH!

Ah, yes, resorting to the ASCII codes. I used that trick last time I travelled without a laptop (back in 2002... actually, I had a laptop back then, but it was before the days of abundent wifi). Didn't occur to me the other day; I was too busy flipping out about being in the Amazon. Right now I feel very much like I'm in a city that's surprisingly bustling given it only has half a million people, and not in the middle of the Amazon, even though I still am. (Decimal 102 is a lower-case 'f', however, not a 'z'.)

Still have no idea why Alt-Gr+@ doesn't type an @, though. But this computer has a US keyboard, so it's all good.

Anyhoo, thanks!

Clearly the answer is, "Just to thwart Mik!" :P

I remember having an absolute centipede problem with French layout keyboards, because I'm a fast QWERTY touch typist, and AZERTY was close but not enough. (Even better was realizing that a password typed on an AZERTY keyboard for some reason didn't correspond to a seemingly identical password typed on a QWERTY keyboard.)

Since I wanted a Palm Pre and didn't want to sign up for some non-GSM mobile provider to use it, I ordered one from Germany. Didn't take long at all to get used to the QWERTZ keyboard-I actually grew to like it. But then some bastard stole it... I hope they never got used to it.

...and Mate, I can't tell you how nice it will be to spend a night on a mattress that doesn't randomly stick a twig up my arse! will be leaving me chuckling for most of the week.

I wish you sound sleep and much adventure-of-the-fun-at-the-time sort.

Turning the mattress over has helped a bit.

Thanks, Sweetie! Hope you're receiving all my SMSes in full. The hostel I'm staying in is called Colibrí, and it was a gleeful young girl, giggling at bubbles, who reminded me of you when you see something beautiful or wonderful, who was scared by the llama.
