It's just gone midnight in San Francisco and I've only been awake for a few hours. Jetlag is going to be fun tomorrow.

Anyhoo, I'm back in London for the day. I'm going to meet some peeps for lunch, see the Eye of London ferris wheel I've been meaning to go on (only because it's a backdrop for so many Brit dramas) and have a quiet dinner with nitoda, twangmanRead more... )

I know what you mean about the Snow Crash beginning. I've loaned copies of it to people and told them to just read the first two chapters. They end up reading the rest, of course. =)

Thanks for all this. I'll be referring back to this LJ entry a lot in future, I suspect.

What sci-fi books would I recommend reading?

The Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson

The Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke

The Uplift trilogy by David Brin

The Ringworld series by Larry Niven

Contact by Carl Sagan

Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Happy Reading!

The Mars trilogy is definitely on my list-the subject matter fascinates me and the fact that I've heard such mixed opinions about it intrigues me also.

Thanks for the other recommendations!

It's so funny that you mention Neverwhere -- I *just* got access to a digital copy of it. What's that word for when you hear a word you've never heard before over and over in the same day?

There's a word for that? That's great, because it means that it's not just me that that happens to! =)

Thanks for your voicemail, BTW. Sorry I rang at a bad time the other day. =)

Bridge of Birds, by Barry Hughart - it's sort of an If-Indiana-Jones-Were-Set-In-Ancient-China tale. First couple chapters slow, takes off hilariously thereafter.

Tuf Voyaging, by George RR Martin - so this cat-loving, mushroom-loving, trader acquires a seedship stocked with a DNA library of the genetic species of many worlds, and goes off to solve a host of ecological problems that bear suspicious resemblance to our planet's own... often pointedly ;-)

I'm glad you asked, too.

You're not the only person who will be referring back to this post...

You and I should sit down with the list of books I've read in the past few years so I can make recommendations. :)

No worries! I seem to recall you having a fairly impressive library. =)
