Had posted a placeholder for this earlier, but it took too long for LJ to decide that I could make a post, so I've deleted that post, and I'm making a new one.
Uck... timing belt issues aren't fun at all. Not that brake issues are any better... And both cars in the fleet having issues at the same time? Just not groovy by any definition.
*Hugs* to both of you - here's hoping for honest, inexpensive mechanics that will get you squared ASAP...

Timing belt replacement is a lot better than timing belt breaking; that can cost you the whole engine, depending on the car. With the power surges, it sounds like either the alternator or the voltage regulator, the latter usually requiring the replacement of the alternator as well, which usually runs between $200 to $400, again depending on make and model. Brakes, well - brake work just sucks at all times.
What thoroughly shitty timing! I'm very sorry...I wish I had a running vehicle to loan you guys :P

Timing belt did break, hence the not-so-working anymore.
We think the surges are computer-related. Long-standing issue with her car: someone ran into her in a parking lot (while the car was empty), and a cable to the computer broke. Computer replacement be expensive, but without this cable, there are fuel flow issues. So, to stave off a many-thousand dollar repair, they put it back together with baling wire and duct tape.
If they're unable to recreate the problem, we'll just limp by on it for a bit, and hope we can replace the car before too gawd-awful long.
