Had posted a placeholder for this earlier, but it took too long for LJ to decide that I could make a post, so I've deleted that post, and I'm making a new one.
Last Tuesday, I decided to take
LEBeast's car to work, as mine was dreadfully low on gas following the triple-trip to fest over Memorial Day Weekend. On the way, I noticed that her brakes were squealing and grinding a bit, so I noted that I should take her car in soon to get fixed.
Then it happened. Her car started to... lose power randomly. Not entirely sure what was going on, but I'm fairly certain that, had Urusula a tachometer, I would have seen it dropping for .5s or so at random intervals. If this happened while at a stoplight, the car would die.
So I drove her car to the shop, explained what was going on, and they took it into their care.
The week goes by, and the mechanics have yet to determine the cause of the strange surges, as (you guessed it!) they haven't been able to reproduce the problem. Yay. Well, so long as it's working, I don't care. What about the brakes? They hadn't looked. Will look post-haste.
It's now Friday, and time to drive home. Get in, get a quarter of the way home, and the engine stops running. Turn key, starter whines, but no movement from the engine.
Secure ride home for
LEBeast, get car towed, start walking home.
Rest of the evening doesn't really matter, but here's the tail end of the long tail... Ursula's front brakes were shot, the rotors having been torn up already. The rear brakes need replacing, but not so badly as the front. Money.
Verdict on mine? Timing belt. Parts alone are $100+, not to mention labor on the replacement.
Timing belt? Rather like 'poor timing' belt.
