He knows his conversation with Avery has gone poorly when she announces she's going to the firing range. He knows it went exceptionally poorly when, upon arriving at the range himself, he finds that she's using a picture of Sean Penn as a target. (In addition to his leftist views, she can't forgive him for ruining Mystic River -- a Clint Eastwood film -- with his over-the-top acting.)
On the plus side, she's apparently not angry enough to shoot at Jane Fonda.
"Avery."
She shoots one last round before putting the gun down and facing him. She's calm. "Jack."
"I assume this means you aren't okay with the promise I made to Lemon."
"No woman *would* be. Don't you think I put up with enough? Late-night phone calls, your private jokes, the way she stares at our kids with that unsettling, childless woman longing--"
"If she has her own child, she won't do that anymore." He waits for her to respond. Eventually, he continues. "You know this is purely an act of friendship. And no one else will know who fathered her child."
"I'll know. I already share you with her *enough*--"
"You have a considerably larger slice of me than Lemon does."
"That doesn't mean she gets to have your baby. Your *wife* is the only one who should have kids with you. Why, Jack? Why would you promise her something like that?"
He considers this for a moment. "I want her to be happy."
"Shouldn't you be more concerned with the happiness of the woman whose children you'd admit to fathering and not Liz Lemon's?"
He glances down. "You're right. I'll tell her I can't."
"Thank you." She kisses his cheek. "You're doing the right thing."
He agrees again because she's his wife, the mother of his children; it's what he has to do.
