Random fandom thoughts

Nov 18, 2007 13:45

For whatever reason, my fandom love at the moment is NCIS. (This is liable to change, even as soon as next week, but for now...) I don't know that many people who write Ziva-centric fic, though, and that was what I was in the mood to read. So, I went over to "the Pit" to see if I could find anything. After searching for Ziva as a main character ( Read more... )

I haven't read it but it was recced on crack_van so it ... probably won't make your eyes bleed? (or well up in faces or something. awesome.)

The fic is at the pit though so you may already have run screaming from it...

Thanks. Actually, however, that rec is what got me started on my recent NCIS kick as is. I read all of that person's stories (pretty decent, especially for being at the pit), and then I was greedy and wanted more. I should have known better. Thanks for trying, though!

See, this is why I send you goodies. You're not even a member of the fandom and you're searching for me. Don't strain yourself too much, as I know that I am easily distrac- *ooh, shiny* and probably will be on to a new fandom soon. It was more a plea for anyone that already had things memoried or favorited or something, rather than a request for someone to do research.

Um. Why is fanon!Ziva such a frigging crybaby? And what the heck are "e3yes"? She has three eyes? Eyes with threes in them? What??

Oh, and the "The F.U.N. Song" video? GREAT GOOGLEY MOOGLEY. o_O

Seriously, I wish someone could explain it to me. Or, better yet, get people to stop! I mean, the woman can kill in eight thousand different ways, she took out her half brother, she diffuses bombs and faces torture without an ounce of visible fear, yet facing Tony turns her into a blithering, blubbering idiot?!?! *sigh*

And what the heck are "e3yes"? She has three eyes? Eyes with threes in them? What??
Okay, I might not like it, but I can understand if someone misses "breathe" vs. "breath" or some other such thing when writing/proofing a story; however, how do you miss blatant errors like "e3yes"? Don't these people have any respect for their work?

Oh, and the "The F.U.N. Song" video? GREAT GOOGLEY MOOGLEY. o_ONow, is that a good "GREAT GOOLEY MOOGLEY"? Or a bad "GREAT GOOGLEY MOOGLEY"? Because I sort of think that video is like crack (even more so than that Sawyer vid to the llama song, way back when) and I can't seem to tear my eyes away from it. Who knew that Spongebob ( ... )

There is some serious character assination going down in the NCIS fandom. I have no idea where this shit is coming from, but man does it need to stop.

Now, is that a good "GREAT GOOLEY MOOGLEY"? Or a bad "GREAT GOOGLEY MOOGLEY"?

It's mostly a "what the hell am I SEEING??" GGM, as well as a bit of a "THE GOGGLES!! THEY DO NOTHING!!" GGM. Although I guess you could say it's generally a good one. Sort of.

And, speaking of crack... you watch Battlestar Galactica, right?

Have you...NOT noticed the nonstop stream of BSG fic I've been posting over the past two months?? Lol. Oh, dear. Don't even get me started on BSG. That show has officially consumed my soul. Virtually everything I think of these days somehow relates back to BSG. EVERYTHING.

As much character assassination as there is in fanfic, at least there isn't too much character bashing in the NCIS fandom. I know that Mann gets beaten up on a lot (which I don't love, but at least she is a secondary character), but the regulars seem to be mostly okay. People in this fandom seem pretty willing to ignore characters they don't like, rather than trying to put them down. Considering what I've seen in other fandoms, I suppose I should be content with that. (I'm not, entirely, but at least it is something...)

Oh, well that is a fairly common first reaction. Watch it a couple hundred more times and it will insinuate itself into your brain. Really. That's a good thing. *evil laugh*

Have you...NOT noticed the nonstop stream of BSG fic I've been posting over the past two months??Honestly? Not really. I was mostly off LJ this summer, from about the end of May onwards. Plus, I'm sort of wary at looking at anything BSG related because I've already been spoiled ( ... )

I read a Ziva fic at ff.net once. It was terrible. Gibbs took Ziva to dinner with some friends of his as a his date, because Gibbs needs a date, and she told all his friends that she was a Mossad agent. And then they ran off to have sex.

That was the end of my search for Ziva fic, so I'm afraid I can't help you. It's a pity, because I love Ziva.

Wasn't "it was a dark and stormy night" the first line of A Wrinkle in Time? In that case, I can see it being in quotation marks, not that the rest of the fic isn't terrible. And not that that isn't a fairly bad opening line anyway.

Hee! I just got done trying to rec rec'ing you some CSI fanfic. Seriously, why can't I just like the popular characters/pairings? It would make my life so much easier. Sigh.

Well, I didn't come across that one (thank God!) but that story sounds about on par with what I tried to read. If you are interested in some Ziva-centric fic and/or Ziva/Tony fic, I did manage to find a couple. I just got greedy and wanted more.

It was a dark and stormy night is one of those cliched opening lines that is supposed to set a specific mood. Snoopy used to use it in the Charlie Brown comics. Yes, A Wrinkle in Time used it as well (to better effect than I've seen it used in other places). However, it wasn't just that line which was in quotes (which I could sort of see, if not fully understand), but the next couple of lines as well. Just that entire random opening section was in quotes, for whatever reason. I'm not even going to try to attribute logic to it.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I've got to the point with Stargate SG-1 where I have preferred pairings but I also ship everyone/everyone else. Makes finding fic a lot easier.

Okay, I could understand "it was a dark and stormy night" being in quotation marks, but not everything else. People are weird.

There are some shows I can do that for. During the first couple of seasons of NCIS, for example, I read Kate/Tony, Kate/Gibbs, and Kate/Ari, as long as it was decently written. My problem is that there are just too many pairings that I cannot possibly see, for whatever reason. On CSI, I just cannot see the major ships (even Sara/Grissom) at all; thus, I cannot read them.

I think that might be part of the reason I have so many fandoms; I like reading fanfic, but there isn't that much good fanfic for the characters/ships that I like, so I have to read across shows in order to find things to read at any given moment.

If you want to have your eyes bleed out read the line in context. I will not dispute the weird people thing. Plus, the lack ( ... )

"He looked at her; he was just staring at her hand that held that suspicious paper. He had an uneasy feeling; unsure has to what it was. But now he looked into her deep dark eyes. He slowly managed to pull something out of his mouth." Do I want to know what was in his mouth? Was it Gibbs' cock? Because I know a lot of shippers are insisting that it slips in there on a regular basis.

ROTFL!!!!!!! No, don't do this to me! You know I'm a gentle, shy, little gal... *chuckles*

All of this post cracked me up. Seriously.

I debated about putting that line in there as I thought it might be a bit much, but I couldn't resist in the end. Other people do a much better job at critiquing bad fic than I do (halfdutch has some classic Lost badfic posts), but I just had to comment because it was all too much. (If I hadn't laughed, I would have cried.)

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that! *grin*

I don't love it, but I can deal with it when it is an occasional thing (such as in your case, when Tony is using an exasperated tone). What I really dislike is writers (and there aren't a ton of them, but enough) who use it all the time. I swear there was one fic which had it 3 or 4 times in the span of a page. It's worse in the La Femme Nikita fandom, just because Michael has an accent, and some writers feel the need to write it out to demonstrate the accent. Sigh.

I'm okay with some colloquialisms/dialect (such as a Southerner saying y'all occasionally), but most of the time it just irks me. As you said, I know what the character sounds like, so if the dialog and attitude are right, I'll hear it.
